Thief 2X: Shadows of the Metal Age not working on Windows 10 64-bit
I tried several times installing and extracting Thief 2X into my Thief 2 directory as the instructions says, but it keeps crashing on me back to my desktop, is anyone else having this problem as well? If anyone can show me a step by step getting this game to work, I don't know what I'm doing wrong if so, I would really appreciate it, thank you!

I see, so it's better to install Thief 2X and load it as a FM in Darkloader which is the FM loader I use? Just put the Thief 2X into my Thief 2 directory in the entire folder or as a separate folder within the Thief 2 directory? I'm sorry, hope this makes sense to you since this is a visual thing to look at and not doing it by verbally.

follow the instructions precisely and it will work fine. no idea whether it will work with darkloder, probably not. also, you shouldn't be using darkloader unless you need its windows9x compatibility - it's unsupported, broken, and does things in ways that are fully capable of completely and permanently breaking your T2 install.

to make it short, just don't use it. please?

Oh ok , then just install Thief 2X like normal and follow the instructions. Someone did say, it works as an FM but they could be wrong. I saw a comment on there somewhere online. The error message I get when it crashes is, Thief 2X has stopped responding and needs to close, one of those annoying Windows pop-ups error messages you get when attempting to run a program.

Yeah the shorthand version is this:

T2X was made before fan mission loaders from ZIP packages were a common thing. Back then installing a fan mission was a manual error prone task. As T2X was an entire set of missions forming a new plot, and it included some game engine patches (this is the problem) they decided to package it with its own installer that does all the work, AND makes a patched version of the game with patched config files.

The problem is that installer doesn't do as good a job as just having it as a fan mission ZIP file, a better technique that started being used by fan missions later. And the edits it does to your game wipe out any more recent patches you will have installed, by clobbering them with the out of date patch that *was* up to date back when t2X was made. Worse yet, the only available installer you can leagally download is the one provided on their site, which is an EXE file, NOT a ZIP file, so you can't get your hands on the content without using the installer, and watching it break your game.

So, yeah the fix is to save your local files off as they are, install T2X, then go into the T2X folder and make a ZIP of the content you see there, minus a few files that you should exempt from the ZIP because those are the files that break modern patches. (I don't remember which files need to be exempted, but the page you found should tell you).

Then put your installation back the way it was before installing T2X (restore from that backup you made above), and use that T2X ZIP you made as a fan mission ZIP, the same as any other would be used, via FMSel or DarkLoader (preferrably FMSel).

I see, so that's why installing T2X is more complicated than I anticipated. I probably should back up my Thief 2 folder before installing T2X and extracting the folder to overwrite any files that it may ask me to do. Which I did do, but then it became so difficult to figure it out so I gave up, but now, I will try again and hopefully it will work. Too bad, there is no video tutorial on Youtube on how to install and extract T2X visually, I'll have to figure it out by words only. I wonder why the game keeps crashing me back to the desktop though when I did extract it to the Thief 2 folder, it makes no sense though. I still can't figure that out though.

let me copy paste all those difficult words over here;

-install T2
-patch up with latest TafferPatcher, let it create the T2 FM shortcut
-install T2x
-run the T2 FM shortcut, and let it create the FMs folder, exit
-move the T2x folder to the FMs folder
-extract T2xfix[drive.google.com] to the T2x folder, overwrite
-run the T2 FM shortcut, double click T2x

also, someone did pre-package T2x into a zip file, search TTLG if those seven steps are too complicated for you (technically five, if you already have T2 installed and patched).

Thanks, that seems like an easier alternative way to get it working. I'll let you know if I have any problems loading it after I follow these steps.

PS. I thought the TafferPatcher was only used for installing DromEd, so I need that too for Thief 2X to work as well?

yes. TafferPatcher is your do-it-all piece of software that will get your T2 install up to date, no matter the data source.

Ok, I just went to the TTLG forums to see if these instructions would help as well, but it didn't The game wants to work, but it keeps crashing on me, saying Thief 2X: Shadows of the Metal Age has stopped working, that same annoying pop-up message. What's causing it to do that. I'm running it in my Thief 2 folder as it tells to do. Here is the link of the instructions I'm using, maybe it's outdated or something, but I have no clue why it still doesn't work. http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=96688

Maybe installing TafferPatcher is the solution to getting rid of that annoying crash to the game.

follow those seven steps to the letter and you'll be fine.

Thanks, I'll try this then, if the error still persists then I'll message you again for another solution that you may have.
