Mate the entire map isn't 1 mile.
All you need is practice and perhaps a headphone, and you'll be able to tell where the voice came from first time every time.
I just bought a pair of earbuds a few days ago and hell they sound dimmer than with speakers, and yes I can find out where they are within reason. a lot easier than with speakers actually.
do note that aside from distance, obstacles also dim NPC sound (including footsteps and voices). So it is very plausible that a sound source close to you but obstructed sounds as loud as someone far but unobstructed.
In fact I have done some research about ANC and this is what I found:
military personnel wears electronic sound protection gear, which is similar to ANC but different. They physically cover up your ears and then electronically amplify weak sounds. That's how they muffle loud noises like gunshots but amplify small noises like footsteps.
In other words, as much as I never wore an electronic sound protection, it may actually be correct that they negatively impact your distance perception (which doesn't even really happen in this game).
For example:
"surround sound".
What makes you think an indie would support Dolby 5.1?
It's kinda noticeable, but it's still pretty wonky. At best it makes it easier to notice positional changes, but it still thumps like mad
such things should be addressed asap, I mean I know this is early access but if basic stuff like this is broken then there is really no point in even try playing.
too bad because I like everything else but like I said with such glaring audio issues pretty much unenjoyable.
^THIS^
...and why is there no dev communication about this? It never should have been left this way for this long now.
