Cutscenes and Briefings not working (Solved)

I tested this on 3 computers so hopefully this will work for you too :)


So first you have to download a codec so that your windows can open the media files.

So to get that just click on the link and press skip then the download will begin.

When the download is finished just open the codinstl.exe and install the codec. After that you need to go to the thief_gold file located in C:\Program files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\thief_gold (default) and right click on the THIEF aplication and go to "Properties" then you click on "Compatibility" and tick the "Run this program as an administrator" and then click apply and your done.

When thats done just restart your computer and if that still doesnt work then im sorry for waisting your time. :)

But stil try it if you want it worked for me so i didnt have to download like a 150 meg patch :)

On the other hand the patch provides countless other improvements I could no longer manage wihout.

I'll just add that cutscenes in oldDark are known to mostly start working as long as the game is run in admin mode, no dubious codecs necessary.

so I'm calling "virus" on this one unless proven otherwise.

not saying that you've put it up, just saying it looks like the EXACT thing you shouldn't be downloading and installing, unless it has really, really good references.

one way or another, as mentioned in the first reply, we have much better ways of solving this for quite a while now.

Of course this method is still handy if you really want to use the old engine. I can't, because it always crashes for me no matter what fixes I apply.

Works on windows 11 sadly i had no idea the game even had cutscenes i finished it without seeing any lol
