So what does that mean?? I need to install a flatpak of Wine as oppose to using the flatpak of Lutris and Bottles? Despite proton being a fork of Wine?
(Below assumes you're on a Steam Deck, in Desktop mode, but should work on other Linux)
In Steam open the 'Games' menu from the top bar, and click on 'Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library'. Then browse to the 'tfix.exe' file which is probably in your Downloads folder, but navigate to wherever you saved it.
You will then get tfix as a game in your Library list.
You should then 'Play' the 'tfix' "Game" - and it will run the Thief fix. You will see the Windows executable run and you can then select the installation folder where Steam has installed Thief which should be something like: '/home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/thief_gold/'
The fix should run to completion and you can close it - then you should be able to run Thief Gold.
If you're having trouble running tfix, try changing it to use Proton experimental in its Steam compatibility options.
As I mentioned previously, I'm not on a Arch distro like steamOS 3.5. Instead I use Linux Mint Debian Edition 6 on a mini pc.
For bottles, what does that mean? I have to figure out a way to install the windows version of steam client first?
But you're using a Linux version of Steam right? As far as I know it will be using Proton to make the Windows version of Thief run under Linux. (Proton just being a Steam flavour of Wine) Have you tried my solution?
If you really don't want to try and run the fix from Steam's version of Wine, you can install Bottles which is a Linux app that allows you to run Windows executables - Bottles is just another application that uses Wine under the hood to allow Windows programs to run. Once you create a 'Bottle', you run the tfix executable in that Bottle and point the fix at the folder where your Thief game is installed.
I'm using the flatpak version, thus I'm using the native linux version of the Steam Client.
If I dont use Bottles nor Lutris (which I also use the flatpak versions of, as well as the flatpak version of Wine 8.0.2) how do I find the proper download for tfix and install it properly on Steam? Am I better off using the flatpak of protontricks?
I'm not sure about the version of Steam you're using, so maybe someone else can chime in.
I guess my question is - Can you play other modern Windows native games through your version of Steam?
If the answer is 'No' and you can only play Linux native games - then you can not play Thief. Thief is a Windows native game, and no one is going to port it to be a Linux native game at this stage. So you can't play it. The fix is also a Windows native program.
If the answer is 'Yes' - then Steam is using Proton (which is basically Wine under the hood).
So Steam uses Wine to play Windows native games for you - i.e. games that have an extension '.exe' Like 'thief.exe'.
If Steam is using Proton to play the game - then you can use Steam to run the 'tfix.exe' that you download, and when it runs you will be prompted to input the path to the installation folder of the game. So you will have to find where Steam insalled the game files in your system.
'tfix.exe' only comes as a Windows native program, so you MUST use either Wine, Proton, Bottles, or Lutris to run it. Or some other Wine based application.
One Final Note
If you buy Thief Gold on GoG - it comes with the fix installed already and is playable without you needing to do any of this. So you could just buy it on GoG instead and play from Bottles/Lutris GoG.
According to the stock terminal on my computer(running LMDE 6 Faye ), it says I use steam flatpak version 10.0.0.78.
Despite me using the native linux steam client on a mini pc with a Ryzen 5 5560u (assuming the Vega APU mine is considerably slower than the Zen 2 in the steam deck), not only I was able to get Deus Ex GOTY and Thief:Deadly Shadows to work on it(Steam Overlay doesnt work), but, was able to run Path to Exile,Prey reboot demo and other windows games via Proton Experimental version.
So yes I am able to run windows executable's in steam granted that they are SteamDeck verified.
And many others that aren't verified.
So you should be able to download tfix.exe, add it to your steam library as a non-steam game, and run it. (You might want to run tfix.exe with Proton experimental compatibility)
When it runs, point it at your steam's thief install folder and let it run.
Then play thief.
Job done.
