Gamma adjust doesn't work in options. Any suggestion?

I can't seem to adjust the gamma to lighten the screens up a bit. I have moved the slide to both extremes and nothing happened either way. The screens are set way too dark (even for thief). Sometimes I am moving through pure black screens with no indication of which direction I am going.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am having the same problem in Thief 2. I purchased the bundle.

Thank you. I couldn't find the string they suggested. my cfg file only had gamma 1. I reset it to zero and it seemed to brighten up the game. Also when I went back into notepad after having moved the gamma slider I found the zero had changed to 0.5. Anyway it seems better and I am very grateful for your help.

You clearly don't have TFix installed. Grab that patch from here: http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134733 install it and then look in cam_ext.cfg for the line they mentioned if you're still having trouble (TFix might fix the issue anyway). The gamma line you altered was probably in cam.cfg; cam_ext is a different file and is added by the TFix patch.
The same goes for Thief 2, install this patch: http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=131106 and edit cam_ext if it still causes issues. Both patches require mission restarts, but will make the games run a lot better.
