Thief Gold

Thief Gold

"The Sword" help & some first time frustrations..
After having played "Dishonored" and "DX:HR" recently, I´ve decided to pick up some classics I´ve skipped back then like the original "Deus Ex", "System Shock 2" aswell as the first wo "Thief" - games.

So far the atmosphere, humour and incredibly well executed stealth-mechanics really soaked me into "Thief Gold" and I was really enjoying it.
Then I reached the "Thieves Guild" and after 2 tedious hrs of running circles and feeling lost I skipped to the next mission, "The Sword".

I haven`t really advanced far in this level but still managed to rack up another few hours of gameplay time.
The game seems to punish me for cheating by cheating itself. I can hardly make a step without alerting several guards of my presence, evnem through massive stone walls.
So far I´ve been undetected in this level up to my save but everytime I try to advance out of my hiding spot, a guard shows up.
No matter what I do do, the time I wait to progress, the direction I take I keep getting screwed and feel like I´m missing something.
As I haven`t really progressed theat far, I wouldn´t mind restarting the level and would appreciate any tipps and strategies for this particular level.

Also, I tend to get lost on surrealistic, illogical layed out levels no matter the size. From what I´ve read so far, I think "Thief II" might be better suited for me.
"Bonehoard" gave me a hard btime as well, I don´t mind exploring and getting lost a little but if there´s more maps like it and with a map as utterly useless as in this game, i might just skip to "Thief 2" instead..

Constantines mansion is tile hell, if you have used up all your moss arrows try pressing the forward key and then letting go of it. By repeating that you should be able to move forward without making sounds. Another tip for this mission: use the weird plant ways, they´re dark and not noisy, you can escape from guards into them. Regarding the objective just go up then you´lle find it.

Thanks, that advice is pure gold, starting to make progress now.
Feels a little cheap though, but then again moving on certain surfaces is irritatingly noisy whereas on wood and stone you can pretty much run past everybody unnoticed.

The thieves guild was a new mission from the "gold" edition i think, its the worst map in the whole game(franchise´?) . Just watch a walktrough if you cant find a certain item/way/what to do. Its no shame, some things(specially items that you need to find) are annoyingly hidden sometimes. Specially the secret entrance to the thieves guild. Anyways, the missions get better in my opinion as you advance, thief 2 got more " structured" missions, where you cant so easily drift of the main path like in gold. Whatever , both games are great. Constantines sword is easily to get as the first guy said, use moss arrows, go into the "secret" way(where the weird ass ♥♥♥♥ begins, rooms are upside down etc) Some advice: you can hold left mouse button to charge a sword attack. this way you can "backstab" (useful at the ghostlike skeleton monsters" that appear later).
The only real difficulty is finding what to do/the right way. This can be annoying from the layout, but it is not because the layout from the map is bad or something(except that hidden thieves guild entrance, thats just cheap, or some super hidden items) , its just big and can have many approaches, heck you can even buy tons of fire arrows and kill everyone, or use ur broadhead to kill people 1 hit in stealth mode(possible if they never heard/searched/detected you before, its insta 1 hit kill). Thief 4 is a fun game, but compared to the maps and the whole gameplay totally liniar(compared to older thief games).

Yeah i´ve completed the mission now and I agree, the level design isn`t bad but when things get as ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up as in Constantines mansion I easily get lost.
I´m currently playing "Thief 2" and having a blast so far. Maplayout is alot more grounded all the places feel real and it´s great fun exploring, finding secrets and approachging the objectives from different ways though it does lack a bit of the originals atmosphere.
Gameplay wise I prefer the second as of now and I highly doubt I´ll enjoy the new one as much.

I never really found the Thieves guild difficult too naviagate. Perhaps I have a pretty good 3D thinking. This is probably the only mission where it is nearly necessary to use your compass but then it is relativly easy. I also though the guild was pretty interesting in terms of atmosphere and gameplay.

Yeah, it´s just massive and i missed some hints regarding the key locatuon. Found the safe with ease but after 2 hrs lokking for the key wandering around clueless i gave up.
"Bonehoard" was really confusing for me though.
Probably will come back after I´ve completed "Thief 2", now that I´ve gotten more used to the mechanics and utilizing the compass and gear to greater effect.

Can't get the problems with Thieves Guild so many people seem to have. This mission is pretty simple, actually. All it requires is paying attention to surroundings and what NPC's say.

Perhaps using of the compass is necessary too. Also Thieves Guild is a blast to ironman through as you really have to pay attention where you are going. The concept of not-very-well-guarded sewers and the well-guarded castles/mansions is also pretty cool.
