Down in the Bonehoard is the single worst mission in the entire Thief series. The supernatural/undead focused levels in Thief 1 are horrible and drag the whole game down.

I didnt like the supernatural elements of T1 either and I think they pretty much ruined the game for me at the end but bonehoard I felt that in a vacuum it was a really good level because it was brilliantly designed in a way that if we changed the zombies there to human guards nothing would change, stealth was good enough, as for cragscleft the supernatural elements were only present in the first part and it becomes another human thieving mission, the other ? ♥♥♥♥, the cathedral Ill give it a pass because of the nice layout and the amazing atmosphere but ♥♥♥♥ the others, lost city could have been a tomb raider level instead it doesnt fit here, theres barely any way to go full stealth there, return to cathedral was unnecessarily padded to the point I used the box exploit to skip the side tasks a ghost gives you, ♥♥♥♥ the undead warriors too, escape was horrible but fhankfully short, bedfellows was forgettable and maw was just a straight corridor with a memorable ending sequence, btw did you finish T2 ? if you did I would like to know how you rank T2 missions, as for Thieves Guild and Mages Tower ranked so high lol, Imo no way I would rank those as good missions, I'd rather have them removed as well, felt like fan maps, poorly done and just ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up the pacing of the game even with it being a human mission.

Every mission in Thief 2 is good except for Kidnap and Soulforge.

Every mission in Thief 3 is good.

I'd still like seeing a rank tho, why not, either way we agree, T2 was consistently good to me, kidnap was pretty crappy because it was one of the worst levels in the first returning + following that annoying guy and soulforge was unnecessarily complex and not as memorable as the maw, as for thief 3 it was pretty good Imo with the cradle being the most memorable level.

I guess I'm a bit in the minority for having the supernatural / horror missions as favorites.

The level design and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in the Sword left me stunned when I played this for the first time as a little kid. Also the atmosphere and sound design in T1 is still way ahead of anything I've seen and played after that. Eric Brosius absolutely outdid himself.

At the end of the day I still enjoy all of the missions altogether - except for Thieves' Guild. That one I hate to the guts.

agree with your points except for lost city on rank 2, I hated that mission as much as thieves guild which to me is the worst alongside mages tower, I wish they would remove the tower and the lost city from the game and just redesign the thieves guild to be smaller the game would be much better, and I agree the sword level design is great that level has so many hidden things, even its own sub-level as an easter egg, rethinking back I would increase its rank on my list, the level design for me in T2 improved a lot with the only 2 levels I didnt like being kidnap and soulforge, while in T1 I pretty much dislike half of the levels.

1. Assassins. I think this one really captures what everyone hopes the game will be when they first play it. We're expecting some regular thievery and we've just gotten 2 levels of kind of weird zombie stuff. It feels like the game is getting back "on track" here -- some guys try to assassinate you, you secretly tail them back to their master, and rob him blind to teach him a lesson. Perfect concept for a "Thief" game. Ghosting the level and nicking the purse off Ramirez' belt is so satisfying.

2. The Lost City. By this point you've realized that the game isn't going to be Assassins or Bafford's Manor. But, if you can accept this, you've started to see that it's still brilliant, just not in the way you'd hoped. This level breathes atmosphere. I dislike the Gold version that adds human enemies, it ruins the feeling of loneliness and trespassing in a long-forgotten world. It's telling that people either rank this very high or very low -- that at least speaks to the level's uniqueness. For me it hit all the right chords.

3. The Sword. The first gut punch the game throws at you. You've done Bafford and Assassins at this point and are all psyched up for another mansion crawl after that Bonehoard nonsense. Little do you know what you're in for...such imaginative mapping!

4. Lord Bafford's Manor. For a first level, it's huge and really does a good job of setting the tone of the world and game. It also does a good job setting your expectations of what the game is going to be. I believe this is intentional, so that they can be more effectively destroyed later -- part of the brilliance of this game.

5. Down in the Bonehoard. I think this is the best of the exclusively super-natural levels (unless you count The Lost City). Levels of this size and scope were not really a thing at the time. I didn't like it initially, but I can't deny the impact it had on me. I remember thinking "where am I?", opening up the map, and only seeing that Garrett had scribbled my exact question on that general portion of the map. That's a memorable moment, and I enjoy the level more every time I play the game.

6. Return To The Cathedral. I think this is where the good-but-not-great tier starts. It's a pretty creepy level, and Garrett reading the little seance over the grave is a great moment. The ghost's busy work does become tiresome though, and I dislike that it feels impossible to sneak in parts due to the tiny corridors, sheer numbers of enemies, and lighting/flooring.

7. Songs Of The Caverns. The best of the Thief Gold missions, but I don't think it's as good as the TDP human-themed levels. It just doesn't feel as polished to me, and the cavern section feels tacked on, like they just connected some other map they had laying around to the Opera House. Parts of it feel unfair for sneaking, with marble floors everywhere and lights that can't be extinguished. It has all the elements of the levels people like, but nothing makes it stand out.

8. Into The Maw Of Chaos. They did a good job of making it feel like an alien world. It's delightfully weird. The portal objective is kind of annoying, especially if you forget to save arrows. The boss "battle" feels a little anti-climactic but is also thematic and neat in its own way.

9. Break From Cragscleft Prison. I like the concept of a prison break, but the execution is quite flawed. The supernatural element doesn't really fit in this level, it feels tacked on and out of place, and not just because this is the first time you encounter it in the game. The factory is annoying to sneak through. In the jail, I hate how it isn't clear which lever opens which cell, and that the guards in the control rooms pretty much have to be knocked out (yes, you can sneak around them but that feels dumb too -- they really don't notice me pulling the levers and opening the cells?). It's also entirely possible to find Felix' note out of order, even on a first playthrough. Carrying Basso all the way out is annoying.

10. Mage Towers. I want to like this level more, but it's a little too unpolished. Parts of it just feel empty and pointless. Other parts once again feel unfair for sneaking, especially the Fire Tower with the metal grates everywhere. I like the concept of having to ascend each tower to get the key to open the next. It would be better if the central hub actually allowed you to enter the next tower. The puzzle with the Talisman at the end is stupid, I still don't get it. I just quicksave and try to grab each one.

11. Escape. I think this one isn't as bad as people say. Emerging from Constantine's basement that you couldn't open before is a nice touch. The way the crazy house is overrun with plants and enemies drives home that you've unleashed something bad. It does feel more like a combat level than a sneaking level, which isn't really what the game is geared toward, and not as enjoyable.

12. The Haunted Cathedral. The start of the kind-of-bad levels for me. The layout is very confusing to me, finding enough loot is a chore, and sneaking is too difficult. I like the touch near the end with the Keeper hideout, but that's the only positive for me.

13. Thieve's Guild. Too big, without the personality to back it up. Enemy layouts feel unfair in the restaurant and especially in the casino. The basement/sewers is just bland. Everyone seems to arrive at the safe without the key, which can be a real pain. Finding the bracelet on Expert is even worse, unless I am missing some note or conversation that tells you where to look.

14. Undercover. Glitchy, or at least very difficult to understand how the AI works. It's stupid that you basically have to knock everyone out if you want to steal any loot. I don't like the unavoidable alarm at the end. Figuring the switch thing out the first time is tedious. It's simultaneously too easy and too difficult -- you can just walk wherever you want pretty much, but also never know what's going to piss someone off for no reason.

15. Strange Bedfellows. Just unmemorable and bland. It's small but also confusing to navigate. Finding the builder's chisel is annoying if you don't know where it is. It's irritating that you can't do anything to the bugbeasts without triggering the objective to kill them all. The game kind of feels like it starts to drag here, thankfully Maw is next.

I liked most of them minus the cathedral levels they just suck. Also while t2 is consistent it has level I would skip because they are that bad. Seriously how do you ignore tailing the courier, casing the joint, and ambush.

Casing the Joint and Ambush are both great though
Bankai9212 Dec 12, 2021 @ 7:31am
Ambush is just a city map with nothing in it, casing the joint pales in comparison to mask which has stuff in it. If there was a buffer level between them I wouldn’t be as harsh. But as it stands it’s just playing the same level twice.

Here's my list, best-to-worst:

1. The Sword. The twist of the house being more than what it seems catches you completely off guard. The horrifying mysticism is impossible to forget, and the mission plays very well, too.

2. Song of the Caverns. As you return from the ancient city, you expect more of lonely spelunking in a long-forgotten caves. What else could it be in a mission with this name?
But it's another twist! The experience of relief is truly amazing, when you realize it's not going to be some another wipe of a local burrick population. Also, voice acting in this mission is impossible to top.

3. Break From Cragscleft Prison. The first mission when you feel like a true master thief. I really like the idea of a mountain that has a foundry deep inside. It's a thoroughly exhausting mission, and when you see the light of day in the end, it's a weird feeling.

4. Undercover. The theme of spicing up the thieving just keeps on going. It's like a Hitman before any hitman games were made. The mission ends in a glorious chase, as the armored hammerites, clunking like a pack of tuna cans, charge after you and the alarms blazing.

5. Return To The Cathedral. While not the first time being trapped in the world of the dead, I like this missions mood. It's quiet and desolate and I enjoy the hammerites lore.

6. Assassins. A well-crafted heist mission with a huge part of the city modeled around the mansion. It adds a lot to the world, and the feel like you're trespassing deep into forbidden grounds.

7. Lord Bafford's Manor. A gold standard of a Thief mission. It almost seems like it could be a full game, by the time it ends.

8. Down In The Bonehoard. A well-made thematic crypt mission, like breaking into a pyramid. The lack of humans makes you change your behaviour, too. I like the horn bit especially, it feels like the expedition was worth it, as you lift it off it's place.

9. The Lost City. A real journey through the underworld, and you're very far away from home. Another mission with a unique mood.

10. The Maw Of Chaos. It's quite a spectacular level, and it properly feels like the last one. No more looting, just a one-way venture into the unknown. The boss fight is quite satisfying, too. Way better than shooting at the Shodan cyber-carrot.

11. The Mage Towers. An absent-minded person can easily miss the clue about the first door being open. It's hard to point something really outstanding about the towers, it's just a solid mission. From here, on my list, the bad missions start.

12. Escape! I have nothing against a short, story-driven combat mission. If it remained the only of it's kind

13. Strange Bedfellows. It hardly feels like a proper mission you're used to at this point, more like the "Escape pt.2". The idea of coming together with Hammerites deserved a better execution. The amount of effort and quality takes a dive off a cliff.

14. Thieves' Guild. A four-hour-long experience of being lost and doomed to lurk the endless corridors that lead to more corridors that lead to more corridors. The only thing I can appreciate about this mission is that they shipped it this way - an artistic vision is more important than a player suffering!

15. The Haunted Cathedral. This is a mission that doesn't feel like it's own adventure, there's nothing memorable here (except the very end, when you glimpse into the cathedral and maybe the first time you hear the apparition). Very little of the level look like a city street, and it's just overly ambitious.

Glad there is someone who agrees with me on this level. I'm very curious to any readers who *do* like Undercover as to why. I couldn't stand it. There wasn't sneaking in the game's traditional sense, I felt every element of the puzzles was tedious and it was the one level in my playthrough where 1) I shamelessly ended up looking up a walkthrough and 2) I didn't remotely regret looking it up or feel like I'd missed out by doing so. The mad dash to loot and escape at the end is quite exciting but other than that, wow, what a frustrating level. Yes, the idea is cool, and I love the Hitman games, but the AI was so confusing and inconsistent that I ran multiple quicksave / save files as I progressed the level, since it felt like it was quite random that a guard would become alerted - sometimes in an area where I hadn't been in 5+ minutes.

Whew. Had to vent.

1. Lord Bafford's Manor - Was there is the demo (although the level design was a bit different) and i remember it most fondly through the main game as well. The guards are taffing around. What draws most of my thoughts are the dual watch posts around the gate into the manor (the other side of the gate is where Garret starts on the level).

2. Undercover - This mission you are undercover as a hammerite initiate. you have to use your head on this mission and try to keep from being caught doing it. it's very possible to get this mission done in that manner. i found it enjoyable trying to get around without arousing suspicion while also looting the area.

3. Maw of Chaos - i found this mission intriguing. The level design is very linear so it's hard to get lost and you have to time your movements between the various critters coming through to the portal in the early going. i liked the level design though through the mid part.

4. Assassins - A bit like Lord Bafford's Manor, only the level design is a bit different.

5. The Sword - Breaking into a mansion that looks normal on the outside but ends up more unusual the further in your go. It's very possible to get lost through the map design and that is part of the charm of the level.

6. Return to the Cathedral - it's a mixture of exploration and adventure along with the usual combat and stealth. i kinda like this level.

7. Break from Cragscleft Prison - This is where the really good just becomes more mediocre. There are parts i liked but the general layout of the prison plus those annoying alarms when caught was enough for me to want to just get out of the mission as soon as i was done with the objective.

8. The Mage Towers - I didn't find this level design that interesting or the combatants, a fairly mediocre experience for the majority of it, the only thing that saved it were the minor challenges in the towers.

9. Down in the Bonehoard - As a rule i despise zombie killing games, so going through this wasn't all that interesting. Again the only thing that saves this level is the level design and the delightful traps.

10 Songs of the Caverns - Nothing really interesting about this level.

11. The Lost City - Nothing really stands out about this level and nothing really write home about.

12. Strange Bedfellows - From the mediocre to the really bad. The level design is not very nice at all and the type of enemies you encounter at times leaves a lot to be desired.

13. Escape! - There are moments i really liked this level, but due to the level design being so poor and the amount of enemies everywhere, i found it difficult to really enjoy this level. more often than not you can easily end up dead after exiting the Constantine's room.

14. Thieves Guild - Maze of tunnels and enemies. I can't say i enjoyed this experience at all.

15. The Haunted Cathedral - The worst of the lot. Having to find your way through streets and ruined buildings, it's easy to get lost or confused about the layout of this throughly awful map layout. The enemies along the way are often annoying. It's just a relief to get past the streets and into the Cathdrel walls so you can get on with the mission but even that isn't interesting.

I made this thread a year ago but ppl have been commenting recently so I get some notifications, its been a year since I did my blind playthrough of the thief trilogy and looking back as much as I love the gameplay 1 introduced its the least fun I had with the trilogy as a whole the supernatural/monster levels had some really annoying level design that made the experience painful save for one I guess which was the bonehoard, the human-centered levels for most part were great but some had really crappy level design and overstayed their welcome like mages tower and thieves guild I wish every level gave me the same experience I had with baffords manor, assassins or the sword, thief 1 is a game I respect but have no desire to touch ever again, thief 2 knows the weakness the first one had (its literally the same game in a way) and fixes most of the issues the first game had and throw the crappy supernatural stuff out of the window (altho theres one supernatural level I think its well executed) thief 2 is simply my favorite stealth game of all time, in other words I think only 2 or 3 levels in thief 2 annoyed me while the rest were excellent stealth experiences while in 1 I pretty much was already suffering halfway through the game, half of the level options werent fun to me .
