Hi man, joined to group and please include it, Im late to the party, I knew about this series but only got into it in 2020, first time playing, no walktrhoughs, nothing, just me going blind, first missions ? amazing, I fell in love with the game instantly, I was thinking "damn this is a masterpiece and it came in 98 ?? how could be ?" as someone who loves visiting classics I missed, just loved the game, the mission before it, the assassins was my favorite too so far just to get hit by that crappy level that is the guild, I imagine the pain of a player who has to experience it for the first time like me, spend an hour trying to get around, complete all ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ objectives and earn the requirements of stolen gold, then just to discover the vase thing is hidden behind a curtain or something and the key was on the other part of the map, so far away, so disconnected to the rest of the level, I had to travel all the way back there just to get the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ key then at least try to return to the area the vase was being hidden, only to get lost again and have no idea where the entrance to that location was but kept going and going until that ♥♥♥♥ ended, Ive even heard after I finished that I could skip it by pressing ctrl alt shift del or something, if I knew about that I would gladly skipped that ♥♥♥♥, I was like ♥♥♥♥ this, discovered this wasnt in the official release of the game and it shouldnt even had to be in the final/gold version, it was so out of place, a FANMADE MAP USING MY ASSCHEEKS WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER DESIGNED, it was a nightmare, Im just happy now with the game again, the sword level which was after that was a masterpiece and Im enjoying the cathedral so far altho the spiders are scary, the atmosphere is on point.
Count yourself fortunate to experience it the way we did when it was released and there
weren't any clues to the game at all. - I was completely taken in just by the training mission,
and half way through Bafford's addicted to the Thief environment.
You have exactly described - in extensively minute detail what many (including myself)
have experienced. - The only thing missing is the worst maps ever !
Nice to hear another enthusiastic player 8 ) - If you don't know about 'Drop-Stacking'
have a look in the Crew for the article. - Those crates are there for a reason ; )
- Thanks VERY much for the contribution - !
ty, after finishing and loving the cathedral the next two were mages tower and lost city, mages tower initially was bad I was like no not another gold level, the way the level looked was very... boring but as soon as I discovered what I supposed to do it became OK, not as bad as Thieves Guild but not better than any level before it until.... the next one came, I was like this one is not a gold level, the pacing will be back on track and now I found the worst level since the guild, worse than the mage one, here lies the lost city, ♥♥♥♥ that map, not that it was badly designed or anything, just out of place again, I had not much opportunity to steath, it felt too straightforward and corridor-y, I was just slicing with my sword everything on my way with no issues, it looked more like I was playing a tomb raider level of sorts than a thief level, too much adventure not enough thiefness, thankfully It didnt take me more than an hour to finish, Ill be taking a break cuz that was exhausting, the next one is song of caverns, I know its a gold level but Ive heard things about it, hope its good.
I think that the way the gold missions were put in the main story was bad, I personally would leave song of caves alone since it fits the plot and is a great level, as for the other two, I would remove Mages Tower for being not only bad but stupid and I would also remove Lost City for not belonging in the game and then I would repurpose the thieves Guild map to be played later in the story and the objective being to get one of the artifacts, I would redesign the Guild and drastically reduce its size for example I would make the sewer section a single corridor or two and remove stupid locations like that prison and the hidden dorms where you get the key to open the box.
And honestly, it's not even that confusing to navigate at all. You can get a grip on the entire layout of the guild pretty quickly and the more I replay Thief 1 the more I like it.
sorry for a first time player like me it is absolutely confusing to navigate, not only your end objective is really well-hidden in a remote location of the map behind a curtain or something that you wouldnt even know could be slashed by your sword but unless you specifically got the conversation between guards you would never know that the item you need to get was there at all unless you had the help of a walkthrough (something I did) and the worst part is that to open this filthy lockbox I had to get the key from another part of the map that I didnt even went to or knew that existed even after wasting an hour or two explore before and completely missed, the layout is confusing, the whole stuff feels janky and amateurish, if the size of the map was reduced and if there was better ways to discover about the lockbox location AND if I didnt have to backtrack to get a key then it would have been an Ok map but it just sucks, you said about replaying you get more grip but again I spoke with my experience as a first time player but I dont even plan on replaying the first Thief game at all since I didnt enjoy it that much as two human levels being super insufferable (guild and tower) and the supernatural aspects ruining the game especially in the third act, hate fighting non-human enemies, the levels you mentioned were all supernatural levels so it fits and I agree they suck but bonehoard for example it doesnt overstay its welcome it can be completely really fast without making you suffer like the guild or the lost city, escape also sucks but if you know where to go it can be finished in like 3 minutes and return to cathedral ? I agree with you, the end section doing busywork to that ghost sucked and I used the crate exploit to end it already, Thief 1 had massive pacing issues and levels were hit and miss quality wise, I enjoyed like half of the levels and hated the other half while in Thief 2 which was a masterpiece to me that I cant wait to replay again and try the 2X mod, I only hated the final level and maybe the lost city one which returned (whyyy ???)
You absolutely should know that you can slash banners, it's not exactly hard to figure out at all, and this is an immersive sim you should be trying to do stuff like that anyway. There are loads of items behind wall banners in Thief 1, this is just the one example where it's an objective item. The key to the lockbox is not hard to find at all - there are notes all over the Thieves Guild outright telling you where the key, the box itself and all other important items/locations are.
I only discovered you could cut curtain in Thieves Guild and then I got to slash them more and more after that level but again immersive or not you would never know every object in the scenery has an interaction, either way this isnt the only problem in TG its just a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ level overall, tbh the only levels I actually enjoyed in the first game was bafford, cragscleft, bonehoard, assassins, sword, song, undercover and cathedral, altho I mentioned 3 supernatural levels I still ended enjoying them, cragscleft had supernatural enemies but it was in a really short section in the beginning and then it became a full human mission about infiltrating a prison and the supernatural element made sense like it was as secret passage but dangerous, bonehoard and cathedral were exceptions because they had great atmosphere and were short and plus the map was decently designed to I could still go stealth and avoid enemies something I couldnt do in lost city and all levels after undercover.
Sure, some vets enjoy the challenge."It's supposed to be hard." - Ya, I've heard that
a few times, but this isn't basic training or a SEALS qualification exercise.
Apart from having.little to nothing to do with the story (at least some of the awful
missions do) and pleasing a few hard-core odd balls it only pisses off vets and
discourages newbies from exploring the game further.
In the over 150 fan missions I've played this ranks among the worst of novice builders
and has been used many times as the perfect examples of what NOT to do when
designing a Thief map.

It's not even hard. It's an easy mission both in terms of guard placements and navigating it. I will never understand how people get lost in this mission.
You're special.
This mission had a great start but it started to drag if you ended up at the safe without the key. Kind of like the equivalent of Breaking Bad Season 2 which almost made me lose interest entirely.
that was my case after getting lost I opened a walkthrough and then found the item just to discover I couldnt open it yet having to find the key and where was the key ? on a freaking section of the map that I didnt even knew was there, having to backtrack all the way down there
