Do old characters still work

I can remember playing this game a long time ago (when it was in v1.64) . Will my old character file still work in the new updates?
Also the old copy of the game i had lying around doesnt seem to work anymore because the controls are broken and start2.exe launcher/updater doesnt work properly. Are these things that should work when i get the game on steam?

Since i knew i had the old updater lying around i thought i may as well try it. I can understand that you may have put in a system to prevent this from working which is why i tried it before buying the game on steam. :)
