"Failed to start game -- App already running"

I'm still getting this error whenever I play.

It's like the game starts twice.

It doesn't stop me from playing or anything.

Do the code monkeys know about this? I'm guessing it isn't a good thing.

If I dont miss my guess, Steam is merely using a boolean flag (it's on or it's off) for the check subroutine. If no part of R3E is still running in RAM then it could be a Steam issue but considering the simplicity of how a check subroutine works it is a highly unlikely supposition. If I was a DEV assigned to fix this issue I would begin my research by reading the Steam API notes on initializing multiple instances. If this is allowed for some software, the API notes will also tell me how to disallow it. The error itself tells me that the "on" part of the subroutine is working. That means there is 2 way communication between R3E and Steam while R3E is up and running. So my place to start looking at the code should be where the boolean "off" hand-off occurs or maybe there needs to be a steam function call (RPC)* added to the R3E exit subroutine that re-runs the check. But the problem is most likely something simple like a syntax error.

What tells me this is a game issue and that some part of it is still running in RAM, is the fact that the issue negatively affects the R3E Dedicated Server as well. I think that if it was a Steam only issue, Dedicated Server would be unaffected once the game client was closed. I base this assumption on the fact that there have been known interoperability issues arising from trying to run both, the server AND the client on the same PC.

The best I can do is forward this to one of our coders, which I will. It's definitely something like what you described (some artifact remaining in RAM maybe) if it happens that repeatedly but I honestly have no clue who's the culprit here. From how I think this works it could possibly be caused on both ends.
Still worth having a look.

Yes. if I restart my PC, it does NOT happen the very first time. Just every time after that.

I have not tried running the Dedicated Server after shutting down the game client and Steam. I have tried it by running the Server after a PC reboot and before i start the game client (with steam running) the server interface comes up immediately. Where as after running the game client the Server web interface window opens but no content; just the blank window.

I use Speccy. Its a freeware info tool from Piriform. I just have to truncate and edit the resulting report as it is almost too detailed to post. Like for example it reveals your actual windows product key in plain text instead of in hex like it's stored in the registry. If you look for the line that says Serial Number in what I posted (12th item down in the list) you'll notice it says "REDACTED"... lolz



EDIT If a hacker wants in he/she'll get in. Its not an "if" but more of a "when". But I don't have to hand them the keys to the front door! (chuckle)

Thanks Mikael, I think the link points to a forum not everybody is able to read though, so I'll just copy&paste your recommendation here:

"To anyone having issues with R3E hanging after having closed it, please follow these steps:

- Download Process Explorer from Microsoft. ( http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653 )
- Extract it wherever and launch it.
- Reproduce the steps you normally take to get RRRE.exe to still hang after having closed it.
- When it does - open Process Explorer, find RRRE.exe, right click it, select Create Dump > Create Minidump and save it wherever.
- Give us that minidump, either through helpdesk or by uploading it here on the forums.

The minidump that gets created is basically the same kind the game spits out when it crashes."
