Car sway at high speeds on straits.
Any of the cars I drive like to have some sway in them at high speeds on the straits. I've increased the steering dead zone thinking it was the FFB. The wheel goes back and forth a few degrees and if I don't fight it, then the degrees increase until the car is all over the place. When I increase the steering dead-zone to 5% the car still sways but then the sway is greater. The car will sway from one side of the track to the other. So, I turned it back down to 0%.

So, this leads me to believe this is how cars behave when they are not setup properly for high speed straits. I tried increasing the Splitter and Wing and it lead to no improvement. Then I tried stiffening the springs and decreasing ride height, but that didn't work. Seems like I remember reading about a setting that makes the car more stable in the straits but causes some over-steer in corners.

Does anyone have any input on how to eliminate the swaying at high speeds in the straits?

I'm using a Thrustmaster F430 FFB wheel.

I feel strange FFB behavior on the straits as well. Rather than the car being centered and stable, it is constantly pulling to one side (usually left), requiring a constant force applied by me to keep the car center. This is when I should be relaxing, and grabbing a sip of beer.

I'm on OSW small mige

this has been a problem from the beginning. They seem to think this is a non issue. No matter how many people complain about it they dismiss it as bad settings. either way, your best be would be to go to the official forums and ask there. Ive come to the conlusion that we just have to get used to it. the more you drive the less you will notice it. The cars with the updated physics dont feel as bad.

I found a car settings guide here - http://www.racedepartment.com/threads/racedepartment-setup-guide.1085/

It had a few tips that might apply here.
"Negative caster requires less steering effort but the car will wander down the straights."
So, I guess increasing positive castor should help reduce the car wag.
"The rules for front Toe: - Decrease opening if straight line stability is too much affected"
"The rules for rear Toe: - Increase opening if the rear-end stability in a straight line is not good"
"Positive camber gives stability in straight lines and less grip in the corners. This is mostly used for off-road racing."

I just realized that R3E doesn't have a caster setting.

That's not what we're talking about. If the FFB effects were backwards for the entire track then yes, that's what needs to be done. But, this is a sway effect only in the straits and only at high speeds. And the sway is very slight but can become wilder if not kept in control.

Actually, it has nothing to do at all with FFB. I turned FFB off and it still does it.

Alright, I think I'm on to something. I set steering sensitivity to 1% and dead-zone to 1% and the car goes perfectly strait on the the straits at high speed. Unfortunately, there is hardly any control in the turns. Looking at the meter in the advance tab there is a constant signal to the left or right when my wheel is centered at default settings. Since my wheel has a cog, if I turn the wheel a bit to the left or right it moves one whole tooth. At high speeds the slightest wheel turn to the left and right is amplified as it would be in real life. So, I think tuning the sensitivity and dead zone just right might take care of the problem.

The fish tail thing has to do with the vertical load. Yours is probably at 300%. I had no idea what it did until I decided to see what happens when I put it too 100%. Its was a nice discovery.
At 100% its still there, but it feels much better. Its a nice effect, but not when its at 300% I have thought of dropping it to a little under 100%, because the sway is there. This setting reduces the sway feeling. I assume 0 would take it away all together.

These are all my settings. I think all of them can be useful to most people, if they are playing with a wheel at full rotation.

The first one is the one that refers to the sway issue. I hope this helps you out. I feel these settings help emulate real life.

DriftMachine, Thank you soooo much for that post. I've given up on R3E for months due to my inability to get my cars steering setup properly. Your setting have made this sim playable with my wheel for the first time. Before your post I just figured this sim was garbage - glad I didn't post a review.
thank you

My "Vertical Load" is only 100 % by default. I tweaked the dead zone and it's helped a lot, but not entirely.

I am glad it worked out for you. If you enjoy the game please feel free to give the game a positive reveiw. Sadly it has a lot of negative reviews. Mostly because its the f2p model. I feel atm this is one the best sims.

I'm not quite ready to review it just yet. I will wait to see what improvements are made with the AI in the near future. As of my experience right now - the AI is just like AC (complete oblivious of the players car). Half the time they are running into eachother on straights. Maybe this is with DTM '13 exp, but so far it is impossible to have a clean race with them. Even letting them all go ahead they are wrecking into eachother at every other brake zone.

The ai sucks in every game. I only rate the driving and track physics, everything else is secondary in my opinion..
