How do I get past Icebound Mausoleum?

There's a room that has a breakable thing that lets down a ladder, but there's no way to get up there. The only way to continue right now is by killing the prisoner and I feel like I shouldn't do that.

after u pull the lever for the first time u will need to find 2? other more levers in order to kill him so you are safe with that
then u can choose if u want to kill him or not, in both cases the door behind him opens

You can break the blade when it reaches it's uppermost position after pulling all 3 levers.
