You can actually pretty early on play a fixed map even though it's not a good idea to do it more than a few times and you keep the stuffs you unlock/find. The bosses stay dead too and you unlock teleporters.
In the 1st play-through you progressively unlock new moves. It forces an order of progression. In NG+ on, you can do it any way you want.

1. Valdis Story - Great soundtrack, cliffhanger story since the dev never made a sequel, solid combo and leveling systems.
2. Touhou Luna Nights - low budget, less polished precursor to Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labryinth. Both are action oriented/arcady metroidvanias.
3. Bloodstained - Aims to copy/paste Castlevania SOTN and succeeds in most ways.
4. Steamworld Dig 1 and 2 - Perhaps too Minecraft-esque but a solid Metroidvania experience with both. The sequel offers the most bang for the buck.
5. Guacamelee 1 and 2 - Fun tongue-in-cheek adventures with smooth combat. Perhaps a bit too simplistic but still challenging endgame content.
6. Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom - Cartoon graphics make it stand out. Sequel to the Wonder Boy remake that seems more polished and fleshed out but still quite linear overall from what I have played.
7 Axiom Verge - Very reminiscent of Metroid. The sequel ventures pretty far aesthetically but is otherwise similar. Can be easy to get lost without a guide.
8. Timespinner - Very similar gameplay to Castlevania SOTN. Story is a bit anime and hammed up but the soundtrack is great. Multiple endings and side content to explore on NG+.
9. Cave Story - You fight with a gun but it has the exploration of a Metroidvania with multiple outcomes to discover.
10. Minoria - Pseudo-sequel to Momodora Reverie Under the Moonlight. Short with a interesting art style and solid mechanics. Made by a very small team.
11. Environmental Station Alpha - Metroid on an Atari 2600. Great sound design with upgrades to find as you explore.
12. The Messenger - To be fair, this game is more Ninja Gaiden than Metroidvania for the most part but it does open up to involve more exploration in the second half. Story is humor-riddled with some interesting plot twists.
13. Hyper Light Drifter - More of a top-down, Zelda-esque adventure but it has plenty to find and upgrade for a NG+ run. Great music with solid controls and premise.
14. Ori and the Blind Forest - Beautiful with a fantastic soundtrack. Combat may feel primitive but environment navigation is top notch.
15. Ori and the Will of the Wisps - Big step up in terms of combat and upgrade trees compared to the original with the same amazing art style and soundtrack.
16. Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth - Sort of a blend of metroidvania and the bullet hell shmup, Ikaruga, set in a Dungeons and Dragons environment. Story is pretty anime but the combat and navigation are well done.
I wanna drop another one, that is no metroidvania or real 2D but i think its a great game that might be missed by people. It kinda has the same vibe as Ghost song, in a way, only darker.
Its SIGNALS.
tbh one of the most atmospheric games i've played in a long time. One of those games that kinda leaves you empty ...
... it leaves you as empty as "catherine, please dont leave me alone" if that rings a bell for anyone. :D
And with my initial post i was more talking about artstyle and overall tone of the game. Not so much 2D metroidvania. Thats why i didnt mentioned all the games with a more lighter tone.

I just need some playtime to cover a week until lies of p is out. I hope that will be good.

I tried it and it was a bit too slow for my taste. i got bored.
Underrated.
Haiku, The Robot
Islets / Sheepo
Shante Series (Pirate's Curse being my favorite)
Steamworld Dig 2
The Mummy Demastered
Isometric, but has gritty macabre atmosphere and gore. Not a metroidvania because you don't unlock traversal abilities, but it does have secret areas to find etc. and it's somewhat open as to where you go.
Yes very good one, I recommend this too !
Odallus is pretty hard or not? Look like it would play like an old nes game😅
Dont even start with "its like the old castlevania games".
I played them not too long ago and this game is way more clunky than old NES games. My thumb was hurting after just 30 mind XD
no thx.
CV 1, 2 and 3 you don't have air control nor does your character grab the edge of platforms. To this day I still haven't finished Castlevania III without the extra lives cheat.
The main difference would be the speed of the game compared with the classics. CV enemies are a bit slower, and because the spites in Odallas are quite big you get less reaction time, I suppose.
Shocked, SHOCKED that someone wouldn't love my boy, Odallus.
I'm going to play it now to mend my hurt feelings and continue to worship the developer as a deity.
I just wasnt feeling it.
