Stack elemental resistances against magic, use any good anti-air attacks on first phase. You can use the summon prayer, so he will attack when you can't. When he casts orbs barrage, you can deflect green orb. If it lands - he will drop to the ground and be stunned for a while.
Durning sword phase, interestingly, rapier is really strong. Dash slash attacks and give you i-frames, which allow you to attack, while avoiding his combo attacks. If you have faster dodge altarpiece, it's even better. For me it was one of the easiest fights the moment i figured out you can dodge all of his attacks with dash slash.
Or just get a time stop and be like every other guy who say game is easy. Spam flail and time stop till victory.
Anyhow, use it and the flail, sneak in a hit now and then but mostly play evasive, then when you've got enough fervor to use the prayer, pop it during an opening to wail on him proper.
I assume the fight is balanced around you having most health upgrades and such around this point.
Edit: Didn't realise that this is apparently the cheese method for him, I just like the flail and figured the time-stop prayer was great for extending vulnerability periods.

It's the stupid unskippable dialogue and the sudden jump in difficulty that's questionable.
Still a huuuuge difficulty spike with a boring intro and phase1.
