HP upgrade? (spoilers alert)

I feel like I'm missing something.

Already opened the passage to the temple (after killing 3 bosses), in it the enemies deal 75 damage (which is equal to 50% of the character's health). Is it really impossible to increase the health of the hero before going to this location?

I found 2 or 3 hp upgrades before beating the first 3 story bosses (not counting the tutorial boss). I think they are chalices? You take them to the same lady that gives you more bile flasks.

Also remember to grab the defense upgrades that the weapon upgrades give, they make a noticeable difference in damage taken.

You can have 2 Chalices before going to Mother of all Mothers. The second one is on the top of Palace of the Embroideries which requires Veredicto and sword&dagger as well as a fight.
