After that some DLCs came out which changed the story a bit. It turns out the miracle was actually a being called "The High Wills" and they essentially farmed the people for their pain and belief in them to grow some sort of kingdom above. The penitent one fights like some new bosses and does some more cryptic ♥♥♥♥ to find the truth and stands up to them with some allies. The penitent one fights the priest dude who comes back as a reddish corpse god and then kills the high wills which basically reverted everything caused by the "miracle". What this also meant was that because the penitent one had died prior in a fight against one of the characters it also meant that he couldn't be alive as it was the "miracle/highwills" that kept bringing him back from death. So his allies stuffed him in a coffin and prayed out of respect and sailed him away into the ocean. Whatever happens next is basically blasphemous 2 exposition.
