Game won't start
When I try to start the game I get the error message:
“Failed to create d3d device. Application will now exit. Error = 0x8876086c”

Does anyone know a fix for this?

Processor: Inter Core i7-4710HQ CPU @ 2.50GHz
RAM: 16GB
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M

You need to install DX9. Go into the folder where your game is installed and open folder called redist. Install both apps from that folder: DirectX and vcredist.

Hi, thanks for the reply

Try this: Go to your speaker properties, klick on tab Advanced and change default format to 16 bit, 44100 Hz (CD quality).

Oh, dear, you've got some issues there. I see you've got a laptop and probably two graphic chips installed (one integrated (Intel?) and the other is nVidia). When you launch the game do you know which graphic chip is being used? There is obvious compatibility issues between the game and your graphic driver. You will have to start going through the obvious troubleshooting steps to try to narrow it down:
1. Verify local game cache. Restart your PC.
2. Run the game as an administrator.
3. Run compatibility check on legoharrypotter.exe file.
4. Re-install the game. Restart your PC.
5. Re-install your nVidia graphic driver, make sure the game runs on nVidia graphic chip.

Let's see if any of this helps. Also, you can do a DX test by running dxdiag in system32 and run 64-bit version as well. Good luck.

Ok I have checked and under Display Adapters I have both Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M. Im not quite sure which is being used and Im not sure how to check. I have already verified the game cache and restarted my PC. Im not quite sure also how you run steam games as administrator. But I will go through the list and try

Also I have re installed the game and still nothing
You have to fix the sound go down to the sound boutton and make right mouse click than click playback devices and then take speakers not headset and then right mouse click on it then on properties then go on advanced and then make the tow exclusive modes on then it should go

For those still struggling...

My boyfriend found this on redit and it DID work.

"Fixed it for me so thought I'd share how I did it incase someone else can be helped by this:
I went to C:\Users\${USERNAME}\AppData\Roaming\Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
Where ${USERNAME} obviously is your login name for your PC, in that directory there is a file named pcconfig.txt, open it and modify the screen resolution to what you want to use, for me I wanted 1920x1080 and it was incorrectly set in the file at 1280x720 so was failing to start, I changed my file to look like:

ScreenWidth 1920
ScreenHeight 1080
WindowWidth 1920
WindowHeight 1080

And now the game launches just fine. Hope it helps someone else."

I also have this problem and tried everything.

The only thing that "helps" is when I turn of my Intel chip GPU. But then the game becomes like a slideshow of frames and unplayable, because the game uses the windows basic driver and not my gtx960m. Can anyone still help me?
I've already updated all drivers, did all things above and more.

SOLVED
“Failed to create d3d device. Application will now exit. Error = 0x8876086c”

The game have 2 restrictions:

1. It can only run on a 1920x1080 60Hz display
if you try to run it on other resolutions or refresh rates you get the "d3d error"
It was not enough for me to change resolution, I had to connect a separate
1920x1080 60Hz dispay to my notebook and turn of the built in notebook
display.

2. The game can only run on a speaker with 16 bit, 44100 Hz (CD quality)
if you try to run it on a speaker with higher bitrate the game manage to start
for a second and then crash.

You must correct BOTH to run the game!
I had the same problem setting up the game for my sister. What Joker[SWE] said helped me a lot, so thanks.

Even with updated drivers and DirectX , the only solution so far seems to be connecting the laptop to a monitor/TV. With the TV connected, the game can be viewed on the TV or on the laptop screen. The problem seems to be the integrated graphics card.
