I found this solution:

"Changing to enhanced graphics or any of the other proposed things DID NOT work for me - HOWEVER this BELOW worked(found it on videogamegeek.com forum). I'm in Year 4 now yay.

I found this proposed solution - going to try it :

There is a fairly common glitch in this level, which even upgrading to Win8 didn't manage to solve (all the other bugs seem to have gone with using the max requirements):

Near the beginning, after building some big flowers that fan you up to a ledge, you are required to do a spell on some statues that breathe fire, melting ice in front of a door you need to go through. What happens is that when you do a spell on them, everything freezes and the game crashes (sometimes even needing hard shutdown on the computer).

Some people have had luck with two-player mode, doing the spell and then quickly switching to other player standing down near the flowers, because what seems to crash the game, is the animation of the statues breathing fire.

However, I have found a solution that does work, without having to fiddle with several characters (and if you are late switching, game freezes still).

Here we go though:

*Go to C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\WB Games\LEGO Harry Potter\ (on XP)
or C:\Users\your username\Appdata\Roaming\WB Games\Lego Harry Potter\ (on Win8)

*Find a file called pcconfig.txt, back it up (I just saved a copy on the desktop, to use whenever needed), and then change DesiredDynamicLightQuality to 0 (near the bottom of the file). That is basically what is causing the problems. Although I read in some forum post or another, that Tt answered someone who contacted them, to change everything below MouseSensitivity to 0, so if you want to be extra sure...

That will cause all the lights to look weird, but at least the game doesn't crash anymore.

*After finishing the level, follow the same path again and replace pcconfig with the one you backed up earlier (you did back it up, right?), to get your original settings back. You do have to quit the game and restart it for it to work of course. Just sayin'. "
Thank you so much! :sans:
nothing working
lol I just beat it the dark tower and didnt get the glitch I guess its just for random people.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHE_E5iZHyg I followed this and just got past, by leaving one of the characters down below, and then after casting spell on statue, quickly jump to other character-so don't see the statues move (as this is what is causing the glitch)
I never had any problems with the game but I am playing through proton on linux so maybe running through wine dosen't have the same problems as on windows. https://www.protondb.com/app/21130

Thanks! It really worked and I was worried it was a PC problem but never imagined I could have found the answer here! Really useful advice. It worked perfectly.
If there's someone who can't find the file, be sure to have your "hidden files" visible at the view options to really find the "Application Data" Folder

On Windows 10: Works for me, thanks, that's a lot of help :)
AnticChii, you're a life saver!
Doing a lil' necroing here... Just got to the area, and everything was fine by itself.
Hi Everyone. Thanks for the above. FYI, if you are using Windows 10, the file location is slightly more difficult to find as with Steam the files seem to have been separated. To find the file in Windows 10 the easiest route is to: Type "Lego" into the search bar by the start menu > Right click on Lego Harry Potter 1-4 > Select Open File Location (this will open Windows Explorer) > Then is the explorer search bar click on "Roaming" > Then select "WB Games" > then "Lego Harry Potter 1-4" > click "pcconfig"

It sends the lantern lighting funny but I can confirm this fix works. If you do not like the change in lighting, you can re-enter the file again after completing the level, change the variable back to "2", click save and finish the game.

If you want to get all the collectables, I recommend doing it at the end as you will need dark magic. Just follow the same route above and temporarily make the changes again.

I hope this helps.
