In fact in HP games you absolutely can finish the game even if you don't collect coins ! The main fun of this game is to use the different spells to interact with environment : build a ladder to go upstairs, destroy a knight armor to build a machine with the broken parts, immobilize monsters ... The coins only allow you to buy bonuses : new spells (only esthetics), new clothes, new character you can transform into with polynectar.
An important part of this game is how it is related to the movie. Because if the main story is the same as in the movie (by the way thanks to this you can explore the various place you see in the movie), there are a lot of funny differences in the game. For instance at the beginiing when Dumbledore is in Privet Drive he speaks with a cat believing it's McGonagall but she just appears behind him so he was speaking with a real mere cat !
To resume : I do not think it's all about coins. I do it when I play but I think it is just linked to my way of playing a game : everything must be collected ! :)
