How to fix "settings file not found"
So, you're trying to play this game on Windows 11 (or 10) and you get the message that the settings file is not found? You've gone through the discussion board and tried everything others suggested, but nothing works for you? Here's another thing to try, this works for this and other old games with similar problems.

The problem is with the user account in Windows 11. If you create your Windows user account using your Microsoft email and enable synchronization with OneDrive, Windows moves your Documents folder to another location and some older applications can't figure this out. So, when you run the config tool, it writes the config file in Documents/My Games/Viking but the game itself cannot find it as it is placed in the OneDrive synced Documents and not the local Documents. I've tried manually placing the file in the local Documents but it still didn't work, probably some Windows environment setting messes things ups.

The solution is to create a new Windows user account that won't be linked to your Microsoft email. Follow the instructions here[support.microsoft.com] for "Add a user account". In step 3, select instruction c that creates a local account.

Then login to your new local account, install and login steam (if it's not already there), install the game (if it's not already recognized, mine was), configure the game, then run it. It should work.
