It's absolutely linear, VR wouldn't make any sense at all.

Have you played Compound? It's not the same, but it's similar.
how would kicking work? with full body tracking you would probably pull a hamstring before you're a minute in

I love VR, but this game wouldn't work. It's clearly designed as a retro flat screen experience. Also it uses 2d sprites instead of 3d. Old school!

It simply wouldn't work in any acceptable way.

You say that, but Brutal DOOM works quite well in VR - with the only major VR concession being voxel guns for the player, since trying to aim with 2D billboard pictures of guns floating around in front of you doesn't feel fun to use.

There is this on-rails shooter called Mirage Feathers, it uses 2D sprites and it's very inspired by Sega Super Scaler classics like Space Harrier and Afterburner. It has a VR mod and it works surprisingly well! (Just don't look behind you, though)
