F.E.A.R.: Extraction Point

F.E.A.R.: Extraction Point

Blown away by Extraction Point
I've played all FEAR games in direct order, but without any extra content.
The repetive nature of the original FEAR,, which I still loved, made me think playing the expansions for more of the same was pointless, especially knowing they weren't considered canon and not made by Monolith.

I just wanted to revisit the series, but sincne they were in the series pack, I thought 'meh why not' and gave it a go.

No idea why, but this expansion got me even more impressed than the original game back in the day. Maybe it's the nostalgia factor, but then again EP holds much more diversity in terms of locations and at least as much diversity in events. New weapons are hell of a lot of fun, too, and combat is very intense, with the 10 year old AI showing better results than MOST singleplayer shooters of nowadays.

Hats off to the developers, and hats off to Monolith for making the original FEAR. Even 10 yeas after, it's a fantastic revisit, On to Perseus Mandate!

Back when they were canon, it was even more mindblowing, since you got to see inside Alma's mind and visit "Origin."

Mindblowing? Was that a Doug Holiday reference? ;) Sorry but his death just made me laugh. "Uh oh..." So quiet, and then he gets tossed around like a ragdoll and turned into red splashiness..

AFAIK Fear 2: Reborn is canon (between Fear 2 and Fear 3) .... it's just Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate that are not.

Right on the money OP! It's a real pity that Extraction and Perseus aren't canon as they should be considering after them the rest is nothing in comparison to the original and expansions.

Extraction Point actually impressed me whilst original FEAR felt dated and cheesy in comparison. Extraction Point is how FEAR 1 should have been.
Extraction Point is even better than F.E.A.R. 1:steamhappy:

3 hours in, this feels really lame compared to the original. So many re-used assets, so many re-used infrastructure, extremely predictable scenarios and jump-scares. Hopefully It'll get better near the end, but I seriously doubt it.

It gets much better once you reach the subway which is like 1/3rd of the way through. The first 3rd is a bit weird considering Paxton Fettel comes back from the dead with no explanation, the cutscenes have very basic animation and camerawork, the church looks like it belongs in Gmod and the sequence with Holiday is boring etc etc. After you reach the subway it all goes WAY up. The scares get better. The locations recieve a HUGE increase in quality (Especially the final location, which is better than anything in the base game) and the plot gets progressively better and better to the point where it becomes a satisfying end to the series if you don't care for FEAR 2 and onwards.

I think of Extraction Point as an extended epilogue to Fear 1. It feels like a natural continuation of the events in the original game.

Extraction Point is a great addon to FEAR. Much better than Perseus Mandate. Sadly, they don't make FPS like this anymore.
I'm finally dragging my sorry feet to play through EP and then I'll hit up PM. I really liked FEAR and I got a copy of FEAR Platinum Edition for the expansions, but just never played them.

So far, I've finally made my way to the Epilogue after putting in 30-40 minutes here and there over the past 2 weeks. The AI is still pretty good and better than a lot of other FPS I've played over the years. I'm still impressed by how FarCry upped the AI level years back and how so many games still can't reach that level....anyway....

I don't find the game scary and I still don't understand why Fettel is back, perhaps the last level of the game will explain it. Right now the story is meh and the gameplay is just as I remember the first FEAR game.

I have noticed the one thing that bugged me in the first FEAR game is still in EP - when you throw a grenade, almost immediately (even when the bad guys can't see you or the grenade) they yell to take cover! Grenade! And they all attempt to scatter. Or times when I toss a grenade and it blows up on someone and I duck back behind a corner before it explodes and I hear all the death screams, I come back out and no one is dead and I have to still shoot them all. So there are some bugs, but not game breaking.

It's an okay shooter. I'm just not overly impressed, but maybe that's because the game is dated.
