Steam Cloud is supported so it should be automatic if you are on Steam!

Related question, is there a convenient way to change save profiles? I know I can use 'start new game' and 'load a game' to kind of do this, but is that the best method? I have one save I'm playing alone and would like to have a separate one that my spouse and I are working on together.

Yes that is the best method.

I'm wondering the same...I'm right at the point of the endgame but I've heard if I do there's no going back, and I want to back up my current save so I can go right back to before and keep going on my current save without having to start a new game over

Not true.

Right before the end, the game creates a save which you can use to go back. You don't have to make a backup because of of this.
I don't suppose anyone happens to know where the GOG version stores the save file
It was in appdata/roaming/witness

This is not what I have found. I played to the main ending where you get in the elevator, fly around the island, and go back you where you started the game. When I quit the game and try to reload, the prior save was way back when I was going down through the levels in the mountain, where you draw on the grid and the corresponding platform appears winding around a glass tower filled with piled-up office furniture. It took me a long time to work my way back to where I could try an alternate ending.

Weird. It's supposed to save right before you get into the elevator. [Edit: Correction, it saves after you get into the elevator, but you can open the doors from inside if you turn around.] Are you sure you picked the correct save? Whichever has the highest number of solved puzzles is usually your latest save.

The save occurred right after I got into the elevator and closed the doors. Once you close the doors you can't open them again, so it was a one-way street.

I just ran through that part of the game again. This time it made a save just before I got into the elevator.

Yes you can.

There's a "one line" puzzle to close the doors, another one to open them. You managed to get to the end whitout paying attention to details? x)

In every case where there has been a one-line puzzle (or multi-solution puzzle) to open doors, the same puzzle is used to close them. In this case when the doors close, the puzzle to close them becomes hidden. No need to be a jerk about it.
