I'm stuck on a pillar in the entry area

There's this pillar in the entry area that has clearly visible (once you've noticed it all, that is) the beginning and the end of the path. The only clue I found are six triangles on each side but they don't tell me much and I can't figure out what the path should be. Do I need to keep trying or is there another hint somewhere? Please don't give me ready solutions or even major hints. I want to solve this but I need a little push.

Don't worry. You should not be able to solve this pillar right now. Although it's near the entrance area, you haven't yet found any simpler puzzles which act as a tutorial on how to solve the pillar. Just leave that one until later.

The game does this repeatedly. You will walk past a complicated puzzleboard, with a lot of symbols or combinations of symbols, before you've found the far simpler examples which let you experiment with just one or two symbols. That will be a better way to learn what the symbols mean.

Although the space you're in does equip you to solve (almost all of ?) the puzzles, don't expect it to be logical or easy. Nobody connected to that world wants you to solve them or made it easy for you.

A little advice: if you encounter a short sequence of gradually complicating puzzles which teach you what a symbol means, draw and write down what you learned as you finish them. It will be simple, but the world as a whole is complicated, and there's plenty of time to forget, or misunderstand, what you learned.

The triangles are part of the puzzle. Just like every other type of puzzle that requires a specific thing to do, the triangles do too. You can find the triangle puzzles throughout the world, so if you haven't seen any yet, keep exploring. Once you know how they work, you have the all the knowledge you need to be able to figure it out.

Damn, am I supposed to learn the triangle based on the small boards with orange path scattered across the island? The ones laying on the ground and no visible effect (so far, I imagine)? I found the correct path for every one I've encountered but it's the only kind for which I haven't properly figured out the rules...

P.S. I'm done with significant part of the game. Hard to tell how significant until I finish (possibly several times) but I visited all areas and activated all lasers except for the jungle and the village. I went back to the entry area looking for patterns for the black pillar.

Ok, so you're almost there. You do learn the rule by completing those that you found on the ground. Try starting off by solving a puzzle that only has one triangle on it. Try different paths within that puzzle. Then try a puzzle with two or more triangles to see if you can see a connection.
