Jungle Puzzle #7 Panel
So after working on this one for quite a while, I finally broke down and looked up hints, which ended up in actually looking at the solution, and lo-and-behold, it makes no sense.

Spoilers follow

So of course you're supposed to listen to the loon sound (sounds like a flute), but the sound is FIVE NOTES LONG, NOT FOUR-as the solution requires. It's low-mid-high-low, followed by the fifth long, very high note. It makes me really mad that they seemed to roll the second and third notes together to pretend like it was just a mid note, but its not. There are 5 distinct notes. Serves me right for being able to parse that sound correctly I guess, jeez.

Just wanted to rage a bit, cause it feels like all that time spent trying to figure it out was kinda pointless.

I've seen some people complain about this puzzle before and I still don't understand this five note stuff people are hearing. Even when I recorded two instances of the sound at different intervals compared to the other sounds playing and slowed them down, I still hear only four notes.

Instance 1 with slow motion as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4q2QM8vVe8A

Instance 2 with slow motion as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGUFARpA6VA

Seems clear to me, low, mid, low, long-high. There is that one long high note that sounds similar, like in the first video right after the initial four notes. with this, it then sounds like it would be five notes. Which here the game is trying to trick you.

However if you listen to the sounds long enough you'll find it isn't part of the same interval the other sounds play at (like in the second video).

I think this is what is confusing people.

I hear this:

Taking out the third note would create a low-mid-low-high scenario, but I just can't hear it no matter how hard I try.

I'm not sure which one puzzle #7 was, if it's the one I suspect it is then you might want to question your assumptions. That one was outright brilliant design, the solution is very obvious once you realize what's going on.

It must not be for me then, cause it didn't make any sense, as the previous two comments can attest to.

Have you considered that the sound snippet might not have captured the sequence you are trying to find?

I have, or had--until forum posts suggested to listen to the "loon" sound. Why, what did I miss?

Sorry, but I am with those who think that this puzzle is bad. Maybe some people have different hearing, but I get 5 notes.

This puzzle was disappointing for me. Every other puzzle so far in The Witness has been brilliant in how it teaches you to understand more complex variations on each of the puzzle concepts, but in my view, the tonal puzzle really broke this pattern.

The first six of the panels teach you to listen for the bird calls, and then to ignore all of the other sounds as distractions, and focus in on the bird calls no matter what else you hear. Then out of nowhere, the seventh suddenly reverses this, and makes the bird call the distraction. On top of the fact that this puzzle will already be frustrating for players who don't have a good ear for pitch, that's just a bit harsh.

This isn't exactly true, the one before it has you listening to the wolf.
