Puzzle Rules
Okay so I realise there are different puzzle types and they all have their own set of rules but what I don't understand is how you're supposed to figure out what the rules are.

In the beginning the puzzles have a very rudimentary version of the puzzle where you could kind of experiment and figure out what the rules are and could then go on to use that knowledge to solve more complicated puzzles using the same set of rules.

I think I'm still pretty early in the game (I've just watched the first video) and I'm already coming across puzzles that clearly have new rules but I cannot for the life of me figure out what the rules are. I've looked around for a simpler version: nothing. I've looked for clues in the environment: nothing.

Does the game expect me to just try thousands of different solutions until I get the right one and then somehow extrapolate the rules from the "solution"? I would ask if I'm missing something obvious but if it was obvious I'd have figured it out by now.

I mean I can sometimes see what look like they might be clues in the environment, but they're so abstruse as to be useless.

If you've stumbled across yellow shapes or stars, the tutorial puzzles for those rules are found farther around the island- the map on the boat shows the main smybolic rule for each area, and in fact is the only way into the star area.

Yeah, there are some with stars and some with what look like yellow/orange (I think I'm slightly yellow/orange colour blind because I always disagree with people about those colours) tetrominoes on them.

Yeah every new symbol you come across in the game as a very simple/tutorial version of it like that first black/white puzzle row in the beginning. So look around more.

You should't have to resort to guessing in this game.

One other thing to mention is that the Town/Hub in the center of the island is a collection of all the puzzle types found throughout the island and isn't a good place to learn any of the rules, despite being easily accessible from the start. I would wander the fringes of the island first, as those are where most of the self-contained areas are.

Yup, that's the place that was tripping me up. After finding the boat, things make a bit more sense.

This.

I thought I understood the orange/yellow shape puzzles but now I realise I didn't. Is this normal? I solved all the "tutorial" ones with no difficulty but I'm now faced with ones that I'm 99% sure are impossible to solve given my previous understanding.

Tell us rules as you understand them and post screenshot of the one you can't solve.

I thought it was that you have to draw an outline such that all orange/yellow shapes displayed inside it must fit inside your outline with no overlaps and no extra squares. Not going to spoiler tag it because it's obviously wrong. Either that or the puzzles I'm looking at are literally impossible.

I really don't want to be given any easy solutions. I want to be able to solve this myself I'm just really pissed off at how this game keeps expecting me to essentially guess what the rules are.

No, you're correct on that point. There's just an additional variation on the theme, and an additional modifier to the polyminos in the blue pieces.

Your understanding of the rules is correct. Which puzzle are you struggling on?
MASTAN May 6, 2017 @ 3:07pm
There are simplier puzzles in the vicinity that will teach you additional rule:
