Window-mode is very dark with default settings.
If not, try to change your renderer in the ingame options to Direct3D or OpenGL.
I'm currently set to Direct3D and both my in-game brightness and monitor brightness are at their maximums.
OR just use the DirectX10 renderer made by Kentie @ http://kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/ for all old Unreal engine games (Deus Ex!, UT99!!)
Common sense bro, please.

You were saying?
win + r (or right click start, 'run')
run registry: 'regedit'
go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Colors
Look for 'AppWorkspace'
if your default font color is gray, the data value is probably something like '157 157 157'
double click 'AppWorkspace' and change the data value to '0 0 0'
save
restart
and have your father read the text with ease
About configuring registry - ummm, I dont think that will be good idea
This DirectX patch that makes the game work with DirectX 10 isnt supported for steam version, as official site says, so... I cant play this game :(
