stuck in Hell

after the lava climb I make through to the room with the cage that drops down, in all the video walkthroughs after killing the guys in the room the grate slides up, however in my game the gate does not open and theres one little guy up on balcony dropping the cage down and he never comes down to fight and I cant see how to reach him. can anyone tell me how to solve this as Ive replayed the game twice and its allways the same.

Long time since I played but if you cant progress like they do in the playthroughs you cant always try cheats:

When you first walk through the big gate, turn left to see a closed door, look up and left to see a broken door with a lizard on it. Jump up and find a whole new area.

Im actually past that area and made it through most of that level into Hels Chamber, been along the halls with fire etc and climbed up a chain into a small room with a goblin that I killed and down again into a room with two skels then into yoom with a gage that keeps trapping me and letting me out, the goblin is up in the balcony operating the cage and cant be reached, after I watched the walkthrough on this section hes always on the ground and the grate opens to next area when hes killed. But not in my game. Is this normal?

ok guys Im supposed to jump up on the cage it would seem but its not doing that from ground level and when Im on the podium ,too late lol this game will drive me nuts!

for those who may want to try this game again with the original levels in, that is what you must do jump up onto the cage it takes untold amount of times to judge just where the cage will co and then Ragna doesnt want to grab and climb up, at least thats what confused me. I feel that is a glitch as he has to do it or you cannot proceed! Unless you cheat and use fly to rise up to next level. I also feel its a great game but very difficult to know where you have to go your foes difficult to kill with weapons available on level.
