But if you want to be smart, you can upgrade them first and then remove them, that gives you the full cost and not just the upgrade cost back.

You are missing something like updates, or you have mods installed.
They are as you can see, simple trenches, all of them from previous battles.
Removing them gives nothing, but if you upgrade them for 18 resource, and then delete them you get 20 (equivalent to full cost)
Pre battle your trenches should look like this:
