I'd hate to see the CPU (and the GPU) heat level(s) if you have hundreds of dead, rotting corpses. Much as I'd love to see the remains of crashed aircraft and destroyed tanks, as with the Close Combat series, but the crowding effect on the battlefield visually, I think would make fighting or even keep track of living troops across multiple points too difficult on the attack.
Besides, bodies between battles were mostly swallowed by the mud and most aircraft were either removed or so badly smashed or burnt up as to leave just a pile of rubbish. Tanks were removed for repair or capture, same with some intact aircraft for study.
But that's between battles. I agree that persistence needs to remain for the duration of the battle in all things, craters and destroyed machines mostly but bodies if your eyes can entangle them from living troops from both sides.
