Research Points accumulate too slowly
In-game, players start in December 1914 with 3 research points, then accumulate 12 for 1915 and 24 for 1916 onwards. Thus, by November 1918, players will only accrue 85 research points. Continuing to December 1919 will only bring this up to 111.

Meanwhile, this is how many research points are needed to max out each individual branch of the tech tree:

Aviation: 40 (+2 from trench)
Infantry: 40
Intelligence: 38 (+2 from logistics)
Logistics: 40 (+4 from engineering)
Trench: 40 (+5 from engineering)

Thus, to max out the tech tree, one must accrue 233 research points. Meaning that players can realistically only research less than half of the tree in a campaign.

I would like to propose in its place a 1-2-3-4-5 progression:

1 point for every month in 1915
2 points per month in 1916
3 in 1917
4 in 1918
5 in 1919

and so on. Even if the game runs until December 1919, this means players will accrue 183 points, and thus be able to research techs that were in common use by the war's end.

I second that opinion.

What good is a tech tree feature if it's poorly done? This makes me wonder if game is worth buying and before I do buy I'm going to keep track of this poor design decision. What mountainmike406 proposes sounds reasonable.
i think the devs did this on purpose, creating replayability and giving players a chance to have different play styles.

Agreed, but that doesn't necessarily make it a good idea.

Getting more tech points, backloaded per the suggestion, would definitely leave open the space for different playstyles. If anything you might not even get a sizable portion of the benefit since warring through 1919 isn't particularly expected?

I think the complaint here is one should be able to earn enough research points to fully unlock the tree. Now that doesn’t mean these extra points can’t be tied to challenges or trials that must be completed in order to actually gain that level of research but there is a point about not being able to research even at the same pace as normal history unfolded.

This is actually a good mechanic. It forces players to make choices about the philosophy of their army. They can go for a really well entrenched army like the Germans went for, or a modern army with lots of tanks and planes like the French went for. Or they can just have excellent supplies and lots of artillery like the British.
