Fear 2 finds a balance between these two being "somewhat scary". If you found FEAR 1 scary - this will be scarier, and if you found the expansions super scary, this will be less scarier (in my opinion).
Everyone finds every game different and FEAR 2 does have some great plot twists, a less repetitive and more engaging campaign, some great lead-up jump scares and hugely awesome level scenes... almost forcing you to go forward and you know something bad's going to happen but still, amazingly, end up being scared.
FEAR 2 has an easier control scheme, more variety of weapons and nicer inventory layout, about the same AI (which was great in the last game) and much more appealing graphics.
There's also more of a focus on adult Alma this time and the QTE scenes are generally good - the ones with Alma are terrifying (although it conflicts canon). I did feel it was a little shorter than FEAR 1 but honestly - felt like a more packed and consise game... leading you in much better.
WARNING: you play as a different protagonist (but it shares some of the events and follows just before the ending of FEAR 1). You also get your slo mo power after the first few levels. I would just get this game and stick with it. The DLC is nice but doesn't add anything to the story for FEAR 2 or have any nice scares or any scares - only one, but really minor, I think.
Fear 3 isn't scary and feels a lot like "CoD". Nice cover system and action, follows up story alright but slightly disappointing lead-up and ending. Still finishes on a 8/10 mark, as a triology. But Fear 2 has a much better ending and I'd pretend that's the real ending for the game. Fear 3 feels too simple, at times, has a short campaign and retains little of the horror atmosphere. Only like 7 jump scares or less in the whole game, but game engine randomises jump scares - so some you won't see, excluding the 7 I mentioned (on the first playthrough).
Fear 2 has great music too - forget to say that. Also, one "sound bug" some people encounter where audio is delayed in cutscenes. Can be fixed by:
Going to windows start menu and type in the search bar 'Device Manager' and hit 'Enter' (Enter key). A window will come up displaying a list of items and options. Under the sub-heading, 'Sound, video and game controllers', you should be able to expand this category out - revealing two further-more, items/options.
With these two, there will be: 'AMD High Definition Audio Device' and 'Realtek High Definition Audio'. Right click on the latter one and hit the option, stating, 'disable'. You can restart your computer from here, as suggested by the prompt but it is not neccessary and you can just go straight into Fear 2: Project Origin, again by simply, re-launching/re-starting it, through the use, of the Steam icon/shortcut.
So basically, disable one of the sound devices you've got there (if you've got the problem) and test. If not, disable the other and re-enable the other and test again.
After finishing with this game and the DLC component, 'Reborn', reverse this process by re-enabling that 'Realtek...' option.
IF you don't have "realtek hd audio manager" don't do this fix and the game should run fine. It's not costly at $20 and well worth it - to continue the story.
