If you are using a Creative product, use Alchemy.
Some games require you to use the analog 3.5mm jacks to get surround sound, so if your device is not able to encode that audio and transmit it over a single line, or if your home theater system doesn't have that option to use analog input for each of the 6 or more channels needed for surround sound, you will still get 2 chanel PCM without some sort of encoding like DolbyDigital Live or DTS Connect.
Please note the ain order to get full surround sound, EAX2 must be enabled. For whatever reason you will not get 3D positinal audio without EAX options being turned due to how they game is programmed.
JonPol, I luckily stumbled upon this thread while Googling how to enable 5.1 in F.E.A.R - all I can say is, "Thank you, thank you, thank you!" Successfully restored 5.1/EAX in F.E.A.R and Diablo II. The next test will be S.T.A.L.K.E.R (these game names full of periods :-D).
I have a Sound Blaster Audigy Rx and using Alchemy still has EAX greyed out but Far Cry EAX is working.
Using analog 3.5mm jacks option.
Have you any tips to get FEAR working?
IndirectSound works but causing game stuttering.

Indirect sound itself shouldn't cause any stuttering based on my usage.
Stuttering only with iIndirect sound , without it...silky smooth.
Am now using DSOL https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/65094?tab=posts and this to configure to my liking https://openal-soft.org/#download openal-soft-1.19.1-bin.zip.
This has no stuttering and EAX HD is also available for FEAR
Do you have proper surround sound? I'm having a hell of a time trying to set this thing up.
Are you using the config tool? https://www.moddb.com/tutorials/be-happy-with-openal-soft.
It can be a bit flaky, as I had no sound from the centre speaker once in blue moon, I just rebuild it using the config tool if that happens, takes 30 seconds.
Also have centre speaker working without surround being ticked.
Re: Halo...coming out on steam soon, won't have worry about it.
Using DSOAL makes things sound distant and muffled, and the pistol and assault rifle sound awful. I've spent 2 days trying to figure out how to configure it but it's only now at the point where maybe it's at the same level I got from Indirect Sound by just dropping the files in the game folder. IS just by default drag n drop gave me proper surround sound and fixed the audio issue with the guns.
Did you try this?
Getting muffled sound in-game!
This seems to be caused by Windows 8 and 10's audio stack. Go into your speaker properies and tick "Disable all sound effects" under Enhancements. Then, untick "All applications to take exclusive control" under Advanced.
I also just dumped DSOAL into FEAR and I'm only getting stereo from it without being able to enable any EAX. Seems to be a common problem. Removing DSOAL and dropping in IS it works a treat. Still bizarre to me that it causes stuttering in your case. I'm also using the standard Nvidia HDMI output to me receiver and I don't have a TOSLINK cable to try straight from my mobo.
Hey there,
I'm glad you found an audio solution that works for you! For what it's worth, I would recommend the fix that JZStudios linked even if you haven't noticed problems and never intend to try IndirectSound again. It's a good thing to do for F.E.A.R. on modern systems :)
