Widescreen resolution 1600X900: Question...
'ello all,

Finally getting around to installing this, and after configuring the various options, I've noticed that for all widescreen resolutions there is a statement "The game is not optimized for this resolution". Not thinking much of it, I started up that game and notice is has sort of a fish-eye thing going for it, where when looking in various direction things appear to begin to stretch the closer to the border of the screen they get to. Is this normal, or have I just missed something? I saw that this game has all sorts of certifcations over at Widescreen Gaming Forum, and I figured they'd throw a fit over a game acting like this.

At any rate, any input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Bel

Well, I played at 1920x1080 and don't recall having any visual distoritions. That said, I remember people saying FEARs widescreen execution is "bizzare" whatever that means, I guess different people have different problems/experience with it. I also recall people saying the game has problems with resolutions your monitor doesn't support, so if your monitor is not native 1600x900, that might be it.

Make sure you've set both the aspect ratio option (FEAR had it if I'm not mistaken) and the resolution properly in game settings. Other then that you might try messing around the settings file (maybe settings.cfg or something like that) to see if does anything, but I think that's about all you can do.

It's a 1600x900 native monitor, so I don't think that is the issue(though I understand what you're saying). I tried 1440xwhatever and a few other widescreen resolution and it seemed to have the same effect. I thought it was kind of odd, but I did have the resolution under "display" and then the graphics resolution set to the same 1600X900(makes you wonder what happens if you set one to something different than the other). Ah well, it may just be the way the game is, I don't know. I do appreciate the input, though. If I happen to come across a solution(assuming there is one), I'll be sure to share it so that it may help others down the line...

Edit: Just a quick update, I was playing that "GoldenEye Reloaded" on Xbox 360, and noticed it does the same thing, with the sort of stretching near the borders of the screen. I never noticed it before, but now that I'm seeing it on this game, maybe that's just the way some devs choose to do it. At any rate, it's not nearly as noticeable, though that could be the difference in screen size(23" monitor vs 48" HDTV).

I believe that widescreen compatibility message you're shown is due to the game not originally shipping with widescreen support (because there were no such monitors at that time) but they adapted it with code from one of the expansions to add support later.

Due to your comment about it looking fisheyed I'm guessing your issue is an incorrect field of view calculation, perhaps due to your nonstandard native resolution. Check out this tip I found on a site which will hopefully let you change the FOV manually. Try decreasing the number and see if you like that better.
