I'm in the exact same boat with my gf, just gotta pick up your second copies of games during sales. :( It would be great if steam was able to implement a feature that let you play multiple instances of the same game on one account if you are connected to the same internet network.
BTW - FEAR 1 multiplayer (aka FEAR Combat) is Free-to-Play
