FEAR giving me a black screen
Hello, just got FEAR recently and tried making it work on my windows 10 64bit computer, ive already been trying to make it work so ill give you guys the rundown, as i ran out of ideas and would like some help please.

So when i first ran the game it did the first boot installations, all normal and then started in a very tiny window, i happened to have another window selected and that got my mouse stuck outside the window, in a knee jerk reaction i pressed the stop button on steam before the logos could finish, that was when the problems started happening and the main one is that when i try to start the game, no matter what i do, what gives me a black screen and then it just kills itself, no errors, the only error i could get was from the config file, it was an application load error, after trying some more things i got a not enough resources error from the config file, another fresh install and back to square one.

So what solutions have i tried so far? Ill give you the list.
Steam overlay on/off
Compatibility mode to windows xp
Resolution switching
Steam.exe on the game folder
Cmd with mklink (however the first cmd line doesnt work for me)
Hard reinstall, folder deleted and all
Verifying file intregrety
Making the folder an exception for avast

Aaand i think thats all i can remember rn, so now i have another fresh reinstall, new folder and all untouched, to basically try whatever new solution you might suggest here, thank you all for he help.

As a sidenote, ive been thinking about maybe deleting the steam cashe? Or maybe installing it on a different storage space... But those are just ideas.

i figured it out, go to your public downloads folder under your users folder, and delete the monolith folder, then run the game again

try checking outside of the public users then, last time at least thats wher ei found it was in public
found it in public documents, deleting it upgraded me from a completely black screen to a black screen where i can control the cursor

If you’re using a NVIDA GPU, force the game to use The “Fast” Vertical Sync mode via NVIDIA Control Panel.

If you’re using an AMD GPU, use Enhanced Sync

Ok so I found a way ( for me at least ) to make it work. I went to the local files of the game and clicked on "Config" and selected 800x600x32 and the game started working. I think the problem has something to do with resolution but i could be wrong. Try it out and see if it works.

enabled fast sync system wide, didnt do anything

Found this on GoG. The Direct Input fps thread fix that’s pinned here on Steam in the FEAR hub fixes it. The HID trick doesn’t work on Windows 10 and 11.

https://www.gog.com/forum/fear_series/black_screen

Make sure to enable/force Fast Sync for NVIDIA GPU’s via NVIDIA Control Panel and Enhanced Sync for AMD GPU’s for FEAR and it’s expansions…otherwise the game will have tons of graphics glitches at 500+ FPS.

Thread about the FPS dll fix can be found here.
