Any essential mods for FEAR that I better put right off the bat for the best first playthrough experience? Any good mods for the second possible playthrough? Any patches necessary?

FEAR doesn't have a lot of mods. Most are just simple tweaks. Check the PCGW article https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/F.E.A.R. of FEAR for tweaks and download the DirectInput fix.

Having checked MODdb for FEAR, basing on descriptions and general appeal, the one named MMod looked the most complete and tweaking the game the way I would probably do it.

Having said that, here are the mods - or rather essential patches - that I used for start:

- Patch 1.8 UK/English applicable for FEAR versions from 1.0 to 1.7
- 1.8 English NO-CD executable file
- autoexec file, according to the guide from this community Hub, to enhance the horizontal FOV

Had problems finding the working 1.8 patch, as the most common version was the US one, incompatible with the game issue I have. Fortunately the all-around UK English did the job.

Well, these are not the mods per se, but still some improvements. From the proper mods, found a dynamic flashlight regarding one, also the bigger fonts for 1920x1080 resolution.

On a footnote, I have a retail version of FEAR.

Anyone knows whether the multiplayer is any doable with any existing patches?

That looks great, will give it a try this afternoon. Does it work ok with AMD gpu? Another thing, the second version using film grain, are the film grain particles moving? If so, this could strain the eyes.

Installation of this mod seems alternative, instructions are murky to myself. There is no mention of Default.archCFG, also the modfiles are loose or contained in directories rather than packed in an .arch00 file. Could you point out how to install?

unpack this file zip/rar in game diretory and open d3d9.ini file

edit path for textures, shaders and preset

[GENERAL]
TextureSearchPaths=D:\GOG Games\F.E.A.R. Platinum Collection\reshade-shaders\Textures
EffectSearchPaths=D:\GOG Games\F.E.A.R. Platinum Collection\reshade-shaders\Shaders
PresetFiles=D:\GOG Games\F.E.A.R. Platinum Collection\ScaringFearReshade.ini

in game press shift + F12 and click dropbox in Reshade GUI and select preset if dont work normal

I understand it is necessary to extract the files loosely into the main game folder or can they be contained in a separate directory under FEAR? I would rather keep it tidy if possible.

When it comes to shift+F12, what is particularly supposed to happen?

Original multiplayer service is down but the community made a standalone version called FEAR Combat. Download here http://fear-community.org/
