After leaving that map, you will brought to the Slaver Camp, there you can recruit another member, old guy by the camp fire. Now you should have three.
Once you make it to Grainhold, you have to complete a certain murder quest for the bailiff, if you do it correctly / interview all involved, you can then recruit one more person. You should then have a four person party.
I never went to the slaver camp. I hit them with my 70 intimidation and they left me alone.
Its a bit unforunate game design that you can miss out on one of the very limited party members.
There are also some problems with the exp levels of companions but i think the swordhaven update will fix most issues related to companions
