Jump scares?
I feel like I'm in here asking this about a lot of games nowadays but whatever :V

I'm interested in this game, but I wanted to ask about just what sort of horror to expect. I'm okay with the creeping psychological stuff from say Silent Hill, but jumpscares mess me up really badly and they'll make me drop a game entirely. Without stepping into spoiler territory, is that sort of content frequent in this game?

For reference, I didn't have any issues with the original Ai: The Somnium Files. This game seems like it'd scratch that same itch.

I'm about 30 minutes in, and I've already been hit by one. I'm not too good with jumpscares either but this one wasn't too bad. Still, it was a bona fide jumpscare. I'll keep playing for a bit and see.

The entire story has less than 5 jump scares.

Hmm. The game honestly seems to try and jump scare you a fair bit, at least in what I've played so far. Often not very effective, but that'll probably depend on you as a person. Honestly you don't have to get very far for them to happen, so maybe buy the game and see how you go? You can always refund if it's too much for you.

Having finished the game, there are very few jump scares - you can count them all on one hand, and they're pretty frontloaded in the story.

There are a few jump scares in early chapters, but once the story kicks off, the focus is put on the suspense and mystery. I don't recall any horror element in the second half of the game (becoz once you know what those ghosts are, they aren't even scary).
Yup. A bunch in the first arc. Like one or two in the following arcs.

Having beaten the game, I’d say they exist, but they’re very sparse and not very scary. I can only think of maybe a couple off the top of my head, and though I imagine there’s a few more, there’s really not a lot of horror to this game. It’s going more for a suspense kind of vibe.

Finished the game, there are a decent number in the beginning, but after the first few hours they drop off and focus less on jumpscare horror.
only at start, there are none in later parts of the game

theres a few but i'd hardly even consider them jumpscares. Honestly, more scary/suspensful when you're just starting out and are just getting into the atmosphere looking around and stuff

I think I only got two jumpscares or something I would consider a jumpscare. One with Shogo and one during Yakko's earlier chapters. Other than that it is pretty much more tension than anything going "BOO!" at you.

played through the whole thing, loved the game, and i HATE jumpscares. Wasnt as bad tho. The jumpscares themseves are very slow and after the first one you get you know when they are coming and what to expect. and tbh the first one is by far the worst lol. It's really easy to predict when the jumpscares appear so just cover the upper part of your screen and wait until it happens if you dont want to see it. its a great game and in the second half of the game you wont get any jumpscares coming for you anyway, so just play it :)

Can I ask what it is about jumpscares you find so off-putting? I'm genuinely curious and not trying to start some BS flamewar or something. Just wondering how other people perceive things because I like jumpscares so long as they are part of a much bigger whole. When a game or movie makes the whole source of their horror jumpscares, I lose interest.
