Unusable with gamepad
I run an Nvidia shield controller, because I like it, and because its really durable. Every xbox controller I've ever had has died after a 6 months to a year. But these shield controllers keep going, and have never died on me. I even have one that I think is 7 years old still going strong, no stick drift or anything. - So to make it clear, I am not willing to change to a different controller.

Now this shield controller works on everything I've tried. Forza, assetto corsa, every flight sim, snowrunner, etc.

But this game - refuses detect it at all. I've used default controller settings, I've forced steam input on, I've forced steam input off, I'm unplugged and re-plugged. Steam itself still detects the controller fine, because I can navigate the steam controller settings page with this controller - but absolutely nothing happens in game regardless of which controller buttons I press, and regardless of what steam input is set to.

Controller function is a complete mess in this title. Ive used a Xbox and PS5 controller and the game decides to always keep switching them off and on all the time making the game stutter then crash. All other games with controller work fine but this mess of a game doesnt.

Did you bother reading my original post? I specifically stated that my own issues have been tested with all three steam input settings.

Beyond this, the default steam input setting DOES NOT apply the input overlay to official xbox controllers, and the generic controller setting in steam input explicitly says "set by developer" - meaning the devs messed with the steam input settings.

Every other driving game I've seen on steam works fine with steam input.

No idea why you're recommending to people what I specifically stated does not work in my original post.

I have had no issues using controller. The issues you are having sounds like the issues i sometimes had in snowrunner with controller input but so far road craft has been jsut fine

i had the exact same issue in snowrunner to what im having on this game and on both of my PCs. They didnt learn at all from the issues and just ported the same controller jank over to the new game.

What are your controller settings, this is the only game that is giving me issues, as its not detecting it at all.

I have had the same issues over the years with Snowrunner too, I am getting it on this too sadly but not as bad, I did notice however under "R-click Game - Properties - Controller" It WAS enabled so I have just turned it off to see if that will make a difference.

In the hopes of trying to narrow down what's happening here for others, it's *working* for me with a an 8bitdo Ultimate 2 controller on 1 machine and a GameSir Nova Lite controller (in WIndows mode) on another.

Steam Input is disabled for xbox controllers and enabled for "generic" controllers. I *believe* both of them are "xbox" controllers.

doesn't matter, every game treats my nvidia controller as an xbox controller. e.g. Microsoft Flight Sim without steam input overlay (because steam input interferes with flight stick compatibility, so many flight sims disable steam input) thinks its just an xbox controller. Which it may as well be, as it has the same button layout as an xbox controller, and merely has a PS joystick/d-pad layout.

The point is, my "xbox" controller doesn't work on default settings (steam input off), doesn't work on forced steam input off (for everything, including generic controllers), and doesn't work on forced steam input on (for everything, including xbox controllers).

Experiencing more or less the same thing with the Steam Deck when I remote play from my desktop. Regardless of steam input configuration the only workaround I've found to get it to register the controls on Steam Deck is to have an actual Xbox controller be turned on and connected to my computer. The second it auto turns off it'll stop registering input on the Steam Deck
