i sure hope so, after looking up a lot more stuff, i am confident that i want to actually support them with the more expensive option... but it's not letting me upgrade???

Return the copy you have and then buy the upgraded edition. Ive done this with other titles. You wont see the refund for however long that takes, but that will do it.
