I'll investigate where the save game is located and report back.
Edit: The save location should be here, copy/backup the folder "SLOT 0". Apologies if this is what you were already trying to do. -
C:\Users\<USERNAME_HERE>\AppData\Local\Saber\RoadCraftGame\storage\steam\user\<STEAM_USER_ID>\Main\save
a quick way to get here is win+r then type "%appdata%" and press enter. You might have to go up one folder to get to Local.
It doesn't consistently lose the game save. It's every 2 or 3 days. I don't have the option to run as administrator when I right click on the icon.
I have a save file in that location, but it doesn't show up when I load the game.
How should I be backing up the save file? So far I have just copied the slot 0 folder to another folder on the desktop.
To run the game as admin you'll have to go the install folder:
\Steam\steamapps\common\RoadCraft\root\bin\pc
It's either "Roadcraft - Retail.exe" or "Roadcraft.exe", might as well just do both to be safe. Right click -> click "properties" -> click the "Compatibility" tab -> make sure "Run this program as administrator" is checked -> apply.
You can right click on the "SLOT 0" folder and "Send To" a "Compressed (zip) folder". These files have to be extracted to be used again, I'm not 100% sure windows comes with this software (I use 7zip and winrar). What you are currently doing is also fine but takes more space. You should do this every time you close the game, as well as keep the most recent backup as well as the backup you just made. This is just in case the save you just backed up, is itself corrupted. The most important thing is that the folder follows the naming scheme when you return it to the save folder. So in this case SLOT 0 is the main save and SLOT # should allow you to make an alternate save.
The save file should also work for both of you, so if one person's get's corrupted or erased you can use the other person's working save file as a restoration, albeit this won't actually be your save.
Edit: Just to note, I have not personally encountered any save issues. The only bug I've ran into so far appears to be only visual on the main game screen when you go to choose which map you want to play. A lot of the time it'll say I have no progress but when I load into the map everything is how I left it and it fixes itself. Sometimes the paved player roads get all wonky, which is probably unrelated and is a different kind of save/loading issue.
Edit 2: You can look into making a batch script. Even for someone who doesn't know how to program it should be relatively easy to make a script to copy the folder and put it somewhere else for you with a little bit of googling. You could go a step further and have the backup be made before the game starts so that way you can make a backup and then run the game with the batch file. IE: you can just run the batch file and the game will start after making a backup of your save.
