I'm currently on Deluge, and the small patches of sand on river banks or chasms haven't worked for me. I haven't been able to find anywhere that isn't already a quarry on this specific map, at least not yet. I find it to be mostly useless on this map, and there is a lot of road that I would like to build but don't really want to drive back and forth constantly. I'm currently trying to use it to do the side mission that gives 8 gas for paving two roads to the dam but I only just parked it at the quarry and haven't tested it's range yet. I have a feeling the AI isn't going to be able to use it and I'll have to manually pour this road if I want to do it this way.
I haven't played the last 3 maps, the other two options besides deluge or the last one, so I can't speak to those yet. However I personally feel like building roads, especially flat wider ones, takes a very long time by yourself. Being able to reposition a mobile quarry would help relieve a lot of the pain of making roads outside of quarry range. I don't think this would take away from the gameplay and for anyone opposed to the idea could just not use the vehicle, or place it in more realistic positions.
I haven't gone back to play the earlier maps since unlocking the vehicle yet so maybe it's more useful there. And of course there is a map that is a desert so it's probably amazing on that map once I get to it. I'll see if I can find that video, maybe I missed something obvious.
