the key restarts everything but you keep everything you have. assuming you have say 5 relics; you now get to progress the first area again; continuing to take relics.
ideally you can get a few more relics than you otherwise would normally; and thats about the only good use of the key ive found.
can also be helpful if youre doing a 'save 1000 gold coins' run; because it allows for a double chance at more relic options or gold rooms.
ultimately though its not needed; as lots of over powered combos exist (like Area (4 slot one) + Prism Core or Hammer etc))
[EDIT] Just happened again -- def seems bugged right now (for me at least), avoiding in the future.
With 0 curses, the key works as it should.
