Am I correct to understand you get less out of shortcuts?

You get 4 set rewards when doing a shortcut of 4 levels, but you miss out on all the regular drops, possible side doors and chests. Is it just for speedrunning purposes?

And what about that Carrion eater that might show up?

3rd area is the only one I don't consider shortcuts, but it's usually worth it IMO

Chests always occur in the shortcut rooms, but yes, you miss out on regular drops.
If you have Prospector's Gloves or Cup of Avarice, shortcut becomes less worthwhile.
If you don't have any relics that otherwise give you +gold+, take the shortcut rooms.

i've had shortcut rooms with 2 curse statues, but i've also had strings of rooms with nothing in them. it's a roguelike, I feel like it will average out.

Yes, u potentialy skip 4 chests or 4 doors. And you dont get to pick what you want.
I always skip shortcuts in endgame.

You get one of each type of reward, in one more difficult room instead of four. There are always two or three chests, and from what I've seen one of them is always unlocked. But you do skip three rooms, which means you lose out on three chances for a shop or processing room. (Also, I don't think I've ever seen a shortcut room with a side room.)

You can disable shortcuts in individual levels, which you should do if you never take them in those levels.

Shortcuts are faster, but you have no side rooms, no choice in rewards, and no chance for shop/processing. I suspect it's for people that really want to get to late game fast.
