Elemental Paths and Mask lines: Is it just randomly assigned?

The elemental wheel on the upper left tells me that Fatuo beats Vis, Gratia beats Fatuo, Malanno beats Gratia and Vis beats Mallano, correct?
So what then is the sense in the order of the elemental paths? When I use Mask line 1 my weapon is infused with Gratia? It would make sense to be infused with Vis because that is on top of the wheel or with Fatuo because that beats the element on top of the wheel. But why Gratia? Am I missing something or is it just senseless?

Sorry, I don't understand your answer. My mask increases attack power what's that to do with mask lines infusing weapons?

Treat them like separate things.

Be it the reminder wheel in the upper left.
Your elemental defenses.
And the perks that infuse based on the mask line slot.

If looking for some long-term change, would suggest posting feedback in the Discord for a high chance of the feedback to be seen if you want to them to rotate the element wheel and/or shuffle the elemental defenses in the UI to line up with the perks.
