As I recall, the game officially supports Xbox controllers, so I'd have to guess that it has something to do with using a PS5 controller. But, if so, I don't know how to fix it.
I think someone posted that they fixed a controller problem (it might have been in this game or something else) by setting it up in Steam. I've never done that, so I can't really offer more than that.
Similarly, I've read that there are programs out there that let other controllers emulate an Xbox controller, but, again, I've never used them, so I don't know much more than that.
One other thing I'll throw out there. I don't think that this is causing your problem, but it does cause a number of other problems in this game, so who knows.
Make sure that V-Sync is on. Some things can override the setting in the game, so you could have Steam or something display the frame rate, and make sure that it matches the rate set in the game. Playing this game without V-Sync can cause problems, usually with how some objects interact. The most common one seems to be problems controlling the RC car, but it can cause other problems. I think turning on V-Sync even fixed a crash for one or two people.
I'd be surprised if that was causing your problem, but I can't rule it out either, so I figured I might as well mention it.
