sonic gun upgrades not working

I bought area effect and played a level. It worked fine. The next level I bought sonic pain and neither of them work now. Batman's sonic suit has gone back to a straight line-of-sight gun that doesn't affect bad guys.
Has anyone else had this happen?

I don't think I ever had that problem and I don't have a fix, but a Web search should turn up some possible solutions. Here's one from Feral support. It's for the Mac version (or Linux, if there is a Linux version), but it may apply to the PC version too.

I shut down Steam, and started it again. No help. I googled for an hour, no help. I finally got tired of trying to find a fix and turned off my system and went to bed... Today it works fine. I guess I had to shut down the entire system. Give it the "one finger salute".
