Forced to play on EXPERT

Ok.
I need help. I bought the game like week or two ago. First time- I accidentaly started on expert. I admiit, it was dumb of me and I got baited by the way the difficulity selection works.
After that I decided to start over on NORMAL. Got to the point where I had the gas tank and radio frequency to The DIrector. I closed the game to do something else, I saved before I closed, but when I turned the game back on the game was on EXPERT.
I didn't press E, it was the same save as I played on the NORMAL difficulity, but somehow I am now on EXPERT.

Is there a way of returning to NORMAL difficulity or is my save now janked?
I know I can try and play on EXPERT, but it is my first playthrough of the game and I don't want to spoil myself by looking in the internet for map of the game.

Yup. It's pretty annoying. It seems like the bug exist for years and no one fixed it. Without a map this game is just confusing and not fun. So I refunded it.

I saw someone mention this bug in the review for the sequel. Apparently you need to play all in one sitting.
