chasing Irons

OK so im chasing Irons but cannot catch him. Why not?

you have to crouch/slide at the right time.

Im using an Xbox type gamepad and cant seem to get sprinting fast enough

I did in on the first try with a Xbox 360 gamepad, I really don't understand why you're having trouble. It clearly tells you exactly when to press the button.

Silly question but are you sprinting when you're running? If you are, you should be able to reach the gate before it comes down. You need to hit the Crouch key as you are sprinting in order to slide underneath the gate. Then keep sprinting and hit the melee key when the guy comes up to attack you. Then you'll bring out your knife and keep running after Irons and attack him.

Default keys for Crouch are "C", for the attack on Irons "F" and for the Melee attack "E".

For the gamepad, controls are Left Stick forward for sprint, B for Crouch, X for fthe attack on Irons and Right Stick for the Melee attack on the soldier.

some dude said if you bound the crouch key to somethng else it doesnt work. you need to make it be the default key

You could always try resetting back to default. Might clear up whatever the problem is. But that's for keyboard. How about disabling the gamepad, detaching it, and trying just that part with the keyboard and mouse?
